“Being a daughter of ” , Nancy Sinatra, the elder daughter of Frank Sinatra, was also a successful musician in the 60’s and had some very successful hits.
Hard work, talent, favoritism or maybe just Luck?
Sinatra was born on June 8, 1940, in Jersey City, New Jersey. She is the eldest of the three children who Frank Sinatra sired by his first wife, Nancy Barbato (1917–2018).
Nancy Sinatra expressed an interest in music and performance from an early age studying dance, piano acting and voice.
Nancy Sinatra made her debut in 1957 when she appeared on her father’s ABC-TV variety series.
After a year performing with her father she dropped out of college, married singer and actor tommy sands and signed recording contract with her father’s record label reprise.
Nancy early musical effort failed to reach chart in the united states but achieved some success overseas in Europe and Japan.
While some children of celebrities wish to distance themselves from their famous parents when pursuing a similar career path,
Sinatra embraced her connections, made the most of them and expressed great appreciation for her father assistance.
After her failure in the United states, Nancy earned some roles in a number of lightweight teen movies.
Nancy partnership with songwriter and producer Lee Hazelwood that contributed significantly and managed to pin a number of hits. With a new look, pitching her voice a bit lower and re-tool her image to combine a tough and alluring attitude with sweet femininity, Nancy struck gold with her 1966 album “Boots”.
A success that coincided with the end of her marriage to Tommy sands.

and a song that would remain a classic of American pop music for decades to come, made her an icon and sent the song to the top of the charts:
for many years afterward she rarely appeared without her signature: Mini skirt and tall go-go boots.
Hazelwood continued with her to the next album, released in 1966: “how does it grab you”. Hazelwood added his gravely cowboy style vocals teeming with Sinatra on “sand”:
Over the ensuing years Sinatra made several songs which sold over a million copies. These included “How Does That Grab You, Darlin?” and “Sugar Town”:
both of which featured in the top 10 hits in U. S. charts as well,
and became Sinatra’s second million-seller.
“Summer Wine” released on Sinatra’s Nancy in London album in late 1966 and later as the B-side of her “Sugar Town” single in December 1966. The song itself became a hit, reaching No. 49 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in April 1967:

In May 2017, retail clothier, H&M, used Nancy & Lee’s version in their “The Summer Shop 2017” ad campaign and as a result, the track debuted at No. 1 on Billboard magazine and Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart for May 2017.

The song spent nine weeks at the top of Billboard’s easy listening chart. The record earned a Grammy Award nomination for Record of the Year and remains the only father-daughter duet to hit number one in the US.
Nancy Sinatra had a brief yet fruitful acting career. She made her debut in 1964, appearing in the film ‘For Those Who Think Young’. Later in 1965, she co-starred with his father Frank Sinatra in the movie ‘Marriage on the Rocks’, where the real-life father and daughter also played the reel-life father and daughter.
She appeared alongside Peter Fonda in the movie ‘The Wild Angels’ in 1966 before featuring with the legendary Elvis Presley in the film ‘Speedway’ in 1968.
Sintra contributed songs to films as well, notiby the title song to the 1967 James Bond film: “You Only Lived Twice”:
Sinatra states that she was “scared to death” of recording the song, and asked the songwriters: “Are you sure you don’t want Shirley Bassey?”
Sinatra traveled to Vietnam to perform for US troops in 1966 and 1967,Nancy sang for them and take some of them in her arms and gave them comfort. Many soldiers adopted her song ‘These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ as their anthem. Sinatra recorded several antiwar songs, including “My Buddy”(1927).
By the mid-1970s, Sinatra had slowed her musical activity and ceased acting to concentrate on her family.
But it isn’t the end of her career and after 20 years later, At 54, Sinatra posed for Playboy in the May 1995 issue and made appearances on TV shows to promote her album One More Time.
between 1995-2013 she released another 6 solo albums.
In spite of her numerous hit songs, Sinatra was dismissed by many music critics and fellow musicians as a purveyor of nothing more than lightweight fluff, a singer who owed much of her success to her famous father.
In a 2004 interview with Nancy Miller of “Entertainment Weekly”, Sinatra defended her career and expressed pride in her accomplishments: “Musicians in my generation don’t pay attention to me. I was not “serious” in their minds. Maybe it’s because the songs sounded frivolous, but they weren’t frivolous, and the fact that they’ve lasted for 40 years proves that. I look back on that now and think to myself, Yeah, you did good.”
