We mention it so often,
So allow me, please, I beg,
Let’s think it through just one more time,
The chicken and the egg.
3
The way we treat the two of them
Is certainly the worst
So does it really matter
Who came second or came first?
5
We see the giant factories
Where hens are forced to lay
Illuminated constantly
To make night into day.
7
They sit inside their cubicles
Quite unaware of time
Their lives have just a single goal
No reason and no rhyme.
9
They never had a choice in it
Their end is not mere fate.
Have you considered how that schnitzel
Sits upon your plate?
11
Those eggs may end as omelets
Perhaps your birthday cake
Do chickens have a birthday?
No! They’re here just for our sake!
13
Then, many eggs are meant to hatch
These chicks are forced to eat
And at a tender age and size
They’re slaughtered for their meat.
15
Awakened just before daybreak
And roughly thrown inside
You see them on the highways
Stuffed in cages, bleary-eyed.
17
I want to tell them that the pain
May not last all that long
That here and there, there are a few
Who think that this is wrong.
19
The chicken-egg dilemma
Could be solved by not consumin’
And when we see our mirror image
We might look more human.
