To Educators:
As students explore more about themselves at a young age, it is important for them to learn about their five senses. Experiences in the outside world include using their five senses such as smell, touch, hearing, taste, and sight. Allowing for students to learn about the five senses creates an understanding of the outside world and the use of communication.
Lesson Objectives:
After this lesson students will:
- Identify all five senses.
- Use each sense to identify objects.
What are our five senses?
Our first sense is sight!
We use our eyes to see. We use this sense to see our friends and family. We use this sense to see where we are walking. We use this sense to look around at our surroundings. Our sight is used for many things!
Can you tell me what you can see?
Our second sense is hearing!
We use our ears to hear. We use this sense to hear our friends and family talk to us. We use this sense to hear music. We use this sense to hear our teacher teach!
Can you tell me what you can hear?
Our third sense is smell!
We use our nose to smell. We use this sense to smell yummy foods. We use this sense to smell the garbage. We use this sense to smell cookies.
Can you tell me what you can smell?
Our fourth sense is taste!
We use our tongue to taste. We use this sense to taste pizza. We use this sense to taste lollipops. We even use this sense to taste soda.
Can you tell me what you can taste?
Our fifth and last sense is touch!
We use our skin to touch. We use this sense to feel and touch a fluffy dog. We use this sense to touch the carpet. We use this sense to touch hot or cold objects.
Can you tell me what you can touch?
Discussion time!
- If you pet a kitten, how does their fur feel?
- What do you hear when a dog barks?
- If someone is cooking dinner, what might you smell?
- If you eat ice cream for dessert, what does it taste like?
- What do you see when you are in the cafeteria?
Activity for the five senses at home!
