Although it’s one of the interesting subjects and most important subjects taught in almost all schools and colleges worldwide, math has had a bad reputation over the years.
In fact, over the years, students have been losing math motivation.
It’s not uncommon to hear students say “I have math”, “I’m not good in mathematics”, “math is too hard” and many other things.
But what could make students lose motivation in this important subject?
In this article, I’m going to share with you several reasons why students don’t like math.
But before I get started, I should let you know that if you’re looking to practice high school math questions, you can find a free online service that teaches mathematics to students in high school as well as colleges. This will help you become better in math.
Ready to discover why many students are experiencing a decline in math motivation?
Alright, let’s dive in.
Math Offers Limited Ways to Earn Marks
For subjects like writing, English, and others, there are many ways to earn marks. For instance, students are awarded marks for being creative, writing with proper grammar, using punctuation marks properly, etc.
With math, students only get marks when they use the correct formula to get the right answer.
Lack of Excitement Among Students
Other subjects like writing and English and many others are exciting and a lot more fun. From the research stage to writing and proofreading, the whole process requires students to engage their brains while staying creative. This increases their excitement. However, with math, students are required to follow the right formula to come up with a correct answer. Students cannot play around with the formula. Lack of excitement in the subject results in decreased motivation hence students end up hating math or thinking that it’s a hard subject.
Math Requires Memorization of Concepts
Unlike other subjects that require students to understand how to apply various concepts or even use shortcuts to get great results, math requires a lot of memorization of concepts. For instance, you can’t cram math because you have to follow a predefined formula to get the right answer. Furthermore, there are more rules and questions involved in math than any other subject.
You Will Have to Make A Lot of Mistakes to Understand Something
If you’re not comfortable with making mistakes then you will find math a challenging subject for you. To become better in math, you will have to make a lot of mistakes. For instance, you will need to repeat the same type of questions several times until you get the right answers. Making mistakes and getting wrong answers can end up stealing students’ confidence thus they start to lose motivation in the subject.
Method of Teaching
Teachers need to understand the level of understanding of their students before teaching them certain math techniques. For instance, some teachers use complex teaching methods that are difficult to comprehend.
Students who struggle to grasp a certain teaching method will forget it even before they walk outside of the class. Their motivation in math will also go down.
So there you have it. As you can see, teachers have a huge role to play to help improve students’ motivation in math. Equally, students need to change their perception of math to become better in the subject.
