In this book, there will be more literary techniques that are touched on in college. Thus allowing for students to be prepared for whats to come when they are graduated. Understanding the use of literary techniques can help them better analyze texts, and even enhance their own writing.

After this lesson students should be able to:

  1. Understand the definition of specific literary techniques, and why they are used in writing.
  2. Understand the effect that these techniques can have on books, and in writing.
  3. Understand how to use these techniques within their own writing (whether it is a creative writing essay or a book).
  4. Understand how to search for these techniques in order to better analyze a text.

Allegory

  • A story that is used to represent a more general message about real-life (historical) issues and/or events.
    • Example: In a book, an author can take two people arguing aggressively, and make that signify war.
    • Effect: To enhance the broader meaning of the story.

Allusion

  • When an author makes an indirect reference to a figure, place, event or idea originating from outside the text.
    • Example: The author can have a character state “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game” which is a famous Babe Ruth saying.
    • Effect: Can give a deeper meaning to the story by referencing someone or something that is not in it.

Foreshadowing

  • When an author indirectly hints at- through things such as dialogue, description or characters actions- whats to come later in the stories.
    • Example: In a book, the author can have a character witness something that later in the book happens to them.
    • Effect: Can assist in building suspense and tensions throughout the story.

Symbolism

  •  Refers to the use of an object, figure, event, situation or idea in a written work to represent something else.
    • Example: An author takes something like a sword which later can symbolize strength for the main character.
    • Effect: It can help produce an impact because it is taking something and connecting it to something else in the story.

Tone

  • The writer or narrators attitude towards a subject.
    • Example: The author can specifically state “With great confidence” allowing the reader to understand in that moment they were very confident.
