As a water molecule, life can be dangerous, life is long. From precipitation in the clouds, falling as rain into the ocean, floating in a body of billions of other water molecules, freezing up on a glacier to create snowcaps, melting on a sunny day and becoming runoff in a stream, getting slurped up by a thirsty creature and excreted as urine into the ground, flowing through the roots of a tree and into groundwater, or out all of the options, becoming water vapor by evaporation to start the cycle all over again.

I started out in the ocean with all my other friends, the water molecules. My friends and I  had been together for miles and miles of ocean, hoping to soon turn into water vapor. If only the sun would pick us. After months, weeks, and days of traveling, I finally was chosen to evaporate. The heat energy was thrilling, like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. As I floated up into the sky the heat energy I felt started condensing into a fluffy cloud. Now I was mixed with heat molecules to form a cloud. It felt amazing to be something other than the ocean for once.

Peter becoming evaporated and into a cloud.

It took a few days before we reached land and it carried us across the country. About 10 days after evaporation, and tons of traveling, gravity finally pulls me down and I fall as a big, wet raindrop into a lake with all the other water molecules. As we sit in the lake for a few days, times are starting to remind me of being in the ocean. I sit and wait until I finally get consumed by a big, hairy creature. The creature swallows me and I get a great tour of the digestive system.

After an hour or so, sitting in the insides of what appears to be a dog;  I become excreted as urine. The urine seeps into the deep soil and into the roots of groundwater. The groundwater flows through the soil and I find my way getting sucked up into the roots of a green plant. Still, on this journey, it takes about a day for me to find my way up the plant and evaporating into water vapor from the leaves.

In a new stage, I float through the atmosphere back into something quite familiar. Again, I feel the exhilaration of heat evaporation forming me into a cloud. The excitement is a little less, but I am intrigued to see where I end up next. Like last time in the cloud, a bit more than a week passes, and I realize I’ve been traveling through the Earth faster than I thought. I never thought I’d end up in Alaska, but here I am!

Before I knew it, I was falling yet again as a big raindrop, but colder this time. I saw some crystal detailing coming off of me, and spikes of intricate snow. I wasn’t a raindrop at all, I was a snowflake falling for a gigantic glacier! As I hit the glacier, it was so cold. It stayed below freezing for as long as I can remember.

Until one sunny day; the sun was so bright, I could hardly see. I started dripping down the side of the glacier, slowly but surely. I became runoff, melting with the other molecules into a stream. The stream flowed rapidly down the hills of Alaska.

The story takes an ending here because my life never ends, and who would want a book that never ends?  As a water molecule, my job is to provide. I never stop providing or moving, just as I was intended to do. My story was long and so is my life. I could never be more proud to share and say what I am. I am a water molecule.
