Ways to Improve Your Memory ( Reading )

A good memory is often seen as something that comes naturally, and a bad memory as something that cannot be changed, but actually there is a lot that you can do to improve your memory. However, it does mean taking responsibility and making an effort. Here are the experts’ top tips.

We all remember the things we are interested in and forget the ones that bore us. This no doubt explains the reason why schoolboys remember football results effortlessly but struggle with dates from their history lessons! Take an active interest in what you want to remember, and focus on it consciously. One way to make yourself more interested is to ask questions – the more the better.

Repeating things is the best way to remember things for a short time, e.g. remembering a phone number for a few seconds. ‘Chunking’ or grouping numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at them in ‘chunks’, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.

Another way to make something more memorable is to think about something visual associated with it. Design a mental picture and the stranger the picture the better you will remember it! If an English person studying Spanish wanted to remember the Spanish word for duck, ‘pato’, heshe could associate it with the English verb ‘to pat’ and imagine a picture of someone patting a duck on the head.

To remember long lists, try inventing a story that includes all the items you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this technique and when they were tested afterwards, on average they could remember ninety percent of them.

If we organize what we know in a logical way then when we learn more about that subject we understand that better, and so add to our knowledge more easily. Make well-organised notes. Be sure things are clear in your mind. If not, ask questions until you understand!

Many experts believe that listening to classical music, especially Mozart, helps people to organize their ideas more clearly and so improves their memory. Sadly, rock music does not have the same effect.

If you do not want to lose your memory as you get older you need to keep your brain fit, just like your body: ‘use it or lose it’ is the experts’ advice. Logic puzzles, crosswords, and mental arithmetic are all good ‘mental aerobics’.  (line 31)

Physical exercise is also important for your memory because it increases your heart rate and sends more oxygen to your brain, and that makes your memory work better. Exercise also reduces stress, which is very bad for memory.

The old saying that ‘eating fish makes you brainy’ may be true after all. Scientists have discovered that the fats found in fish like tuna, sardines, and salmon – as well as in olive oil – help to improve the memory. Vitamins C and E (found in fruits like oranges, strawberries, and red grapes) and vitamin B (found in lean meat and green vegetables) are all good ‘brain food’, too.

Caffeine may not be too good for you, but like exercise, it increases your heart rate and sends more oxygen to your brain. A cup of coffee really does help you concentrate when you sit down and study. And if you don’t like coffee, don’t worry – experts believe that chewing gum has the same effect!

Annaleise Carr, 14, Youngest Person to Swim Lake Ontario

Last fall, a young Ontario girl named Annaleise Carr visited Camp Trillium for children with cancer and was so moved that she asked to volunteer — but at 13 she was too young to help. Instead, the toothy girl from Norfolk County decided to raise money for the camp by becoming the youngest person to swim across Lake Ontario.

As sunset faded into Sunday evening, the 14-year-old girl approached Marilyn Bell Park, on Lakeshore Drive in Toronto. She touched the wall just before 9 p.m., then turned around and hugged her swim coach, Lisa Anderson, who accompanied her on a Zodiac boat. While dozens cheered and applauded, she climbed up the pier, was wrapped in a towel and hugged by her family. A few minutes later, she sat on a lawn chair and was checked by Mark Ghesquiere, a doctor who had followed her by boat with a support team. She was then taken to hospital for a more thorough checkup. Her support team said she was exhausted but otherwise fine. It had taken her nearly 27 hours fighting high waves, cold current, and leg cramps.

Her parents, Jeff and Debbie Carr, recalled in an interview that they had first opposed to her project but now smiled with pride as they described Annaleise as a determined, altruistic youth.

Before her big swim, she swallowed a thermometer pill, a device first developed by NASA to monitor body temperature on astronauts. The pill’s wireless transmission enabled Annaleise’s support team to make sure her core temperature remained stable. She also had a light on her swimming cap to remain visible.

After a one-day delay because of high winds, she set off on Saturday, at 6:17:10 p.m, from Queen’s Royal Park in Niagara-on-the-Lake. She was initially helped by the push from the Niagara River’s current but soon was slowed by the wind. Waves began getting higher and higher, reaching 1.5 metres. For hours, she also faced a 10-knot headwind and the water temperature cooled to 13 degrees. The weather was better through Sunday but she began cramping in the afternoon and a physiotherapist on the boat prescribed stretching exercises.

Going Green!

By Julie Cameron

When I told my mother I was going to be a vegetarian she didn’t try to discourage me, she simply said, ‘Fine, but I’m not making two dinners’. She thought it was a phase, something that I would grow out of. After all, who can live their entire life without eating a hamburger, or the traditional turkey at Thanksgiving? Turns out, lots of people can.

Much to my mother’s dismay, I turned out to be one of the thousands of vegetarians in Canada who were under the voting age. Some people thought I did it to be cool, some people (like my mother) thought I did it for shock value. But I was always asked the one-word question:

WHY?

Lots of reasons. I was never a big steak fan, loved animals, and when I was little I had a friend who lived on a dairy farm. If you have ever named a cow, you will understand how difficult it is to sit down to a hamburger. But there was, of course, one fateful encounter that pushed me to my dinner of destiny.

My mother had a friend named Jen. Jen had long brown hair down to her calves. I’m not exaggerating, it was down to her calves. She insisted we go to a natural food store in our town so she could get organic vegetables and soymilk. I had never even known what soy was, or that there was a difference between vegetables from the grocery store and vegetables from a natural food store. And I was amazed. Not only did she have hair down to her calves, but she also knew about foods I had never even heard of. My decision was made.

I feel very fortunate to be a vegetarian in an age where there are so many meat alternatives. My friends and family appreciate that I don’t try to force my food choices on them. If you are thinking about becoming a vegetarian, it’s important to do a little research first and make sure you maintain a healthy diet. I have met so many junk-food vegetarians (a self-proclaimed vegetarian who doesn’t eat meat, but doesn’t eat anything healthy or remotely close to a vegetable), that I’m not surprised most people think eating vegetarian isn’t healthy.

According to paragraph 1, how did Julie’s mother react to her daughter’s decision to become a vegetarian?

20
What finally persuaded Julie to try vegetarianism? 1.
According to the text, which of the following is the most essential to be a vegetarian?

According to the text, all of the following statements about vegetarians are true EXCEPT ______.

Choose a Small Pet

By Ginny Morris When choosing a small pet, consider how much time you have to dedicate to the upkeep of your new companion. Many small mammals are physically easy to care for (1) ______.

A lower-maintenance small pet is the fancy rat, which lives about 3 years. Rodents are very social and it’s good to get a pair at a time; just make sure they are the same gender! Rats need grains and meat protein, which can be provided with dry dog food or mealworms. Domestic rats usually aren’t aggressive; (2) ______ .

Rabbits are also gentle and low-maintenance but they can live at least 10 years, (3) ______. Rabbits generally eat pellets and plenty of green vegetables; they will also eat hay. They like to be held but shouldn’t be handled too much the first few days after purchasing, in order to adjust. Rabbits need plenty of out-of-cage exercise; many pet stores carry rabbit leashes, (4) ______.

Even small mammals need plenty of space. For any small mammal, choose a cage with a solid bottom rather than a wire one, to prevent injuries to the paws. A rabbit needs a cage or hutch of at least 1 ½ feet wide by 2 ½ feet long, by 2 feet deep. Rabbits can be kept outside but make sure their hutch is well-sheltered. Small mammals need bedding for their homes; shredded paper or paper towels work best. Wood shavings work as well, (5) ______. Bedding needs to be changed about 3 times a week.

When choosing a small pet always be sure to look for alert, bright-eyed animals with smooth coats; (6) ______, that’s a good sign too.

if an animal also expresses interest in you

so they are a serious commitment

but avoid cedar or pine chips because of the oil they contain

if brushed with a baby’s hairbrush

so you can keep your pet close by when outside

so as social animals they do better in pairs

but require a lot of attention and affection

however, make sure you choose a pet from a reputable store or breeder so as not to get bitten
