I always wanted to know who really invented the cherry tomatoes, is it true that this is an Israeli invention?
Let’s check
Despite the popular claim that cherry tomatoes are an Israeli invention, this claim is inaccurate, in fact their origin is in Central America, and from the 17th century there is evidence of the use of cherry tomatoes in Western culture, in the early 20th century cherry tomatoes began to be common in the US.
The name of the cherry tomato was given to it because it resembles a cherry, in English “cherry”.
The most common cherry tomato variety in Israel was created as a result of 12 years of research and development by scientists from the Faculty of Agriculture of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, located in Rehovot.
This variety called Tomaccio is probably the source of the common mistake that cherry tomatoes in general were invented in Israel
