Мета:

• навчальна: розвивати вміння студентів читати текст з метою отримання загального уявлення та максимально повного розуміння інформації, що міститься в тексті; ознайомити з новою лексикою та активізувати її вживання в мові; формувати вміння вільно спілкуватися, висловлювати свою думку щодо поставленої проблеми;
• розвиваюча: розвивати вміння працювати в групі, виконуючи поставлене завдання; розвивати правописні уміння і навички, інтелектуальні здібності студентів та їх самостійну навчальну діяльність;
• освітня: розширення знань студентів про королівство Великобританії, формування комунікативних, соціополікультурних компетенцій;
• виховна: виховання поваги до потреб у практичному використанні англійської мови.

Обладнання: географічна карта світу, картки з зображеннями визначних місць Британії.

Each student gets the card with the riddle and the number (1-12). Their task is to guess the word and to write the first letter of it on the blackboard in the square marked by the number the student has in his/her card.

Today we will begin to discuss the topic, connected with the country, where English is a native language. We begin a great excursion to the country, where English was born and developed.

You should learn more facts about Britain. Today we will speak about the geographical position of Great Britain. Get ready to discuss the main notions on the topic, such as: official name, countries making up Great Britain, highest mountain, longest river, capital, climate. And at the end of the lesson there will be a short test in order to check your work. OK! Let’s go ahead!

The first part of our excursion will be connected with the geographical position of Great Britain. But before, I want to check up your knowledge of geography. I have a little quiz, which will help us to define real geography connoisseurs.

Listening

Now when you know the name of the state, look at the map of it. Listen to a summary and then be ready to correct the mistakes in the sentences.

There are four different countries in the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Altogether more than 56 million people live in Britain, many of them in big industrial cities like London, Liverpool and Manchester. Northern Ireland is situated in the northern part of Ireland. The territory of the United Kingdom is about 244 square kilometers and it takes the 75th place among other countries in the world. The capital of the country is London.

Now look at the sentences and correct them if necessary.

7. Let’s move on and add some facts about the geographical position of the state. Now, can I ask you to make three groups? Each group gets:

• short information about mountains, rivers or waters that wash Great Britain;

Please read the texts and get ready to tell the class what you have learned. Remember that everybody has to tell us at least one sentence. While you work I come and help with the pronunciation of the new words. So, begin, you have some minutes.

The task for group 1:

Great Britain is separated from the continent by the English Channel, the narrower part of which is called the Strait of Dover. The British Isles are surrounded by the shallow waters of the Irish Sea and the North Sea, the North Channel and the Atlantic Ocean. Britain is comparatively small, but there is hardly a country, in the world where such a variety of scenery can be found.

The task for group 2:

Great Britain can be divided into two parts: Lowland Britain in the south and east, and Highland Britain in the North and West. The most important mountain territories are those located in the north of Scotland. Geologically these North West Mountains and the Grampians are among the oldest in the world. The highest peak is Ben Nevis (1343 m.). In the centre of England is a range of mountains called the Pennines. The Cambrian Mountains occupy nearly the whole of Wales. The highest peak there is Snowdon (1085 m.).

The task for group 3:

The rivers of the region are short and of no great importance as waterways.

The longest of them are the Severn (354 km) and the Thames, which is 346 kilometers long. Other comparatively long rivers are: the Trent, the Tweed, and the Wye. Lakes are found in the Lake District in England and in the highlands of Scotland. One of the best known lakes is Loch Ness in Scotland, famous for its ‘Loch Ness Monster’.

All right, it’s time to share information. Please, all members of the group 1 come to the blackboard and one by one tell us what you have learnt and show everything on the map. Then go group 2 and 3.

Good job! And now after intensive work I am sure you need some rest. Let’s play “Bingo!”. All the new geographical names are written on the blackboard. Draw a model for the game. As you remember it is a table of nine cells. Then put down some nine names in them. (5 min)

Now I read you the names and if you hear one from your table, cross it. If you have horizontal, diagonal, or vertical crossings, raise your hand and say “Bingo!”. The first is the gold winner and the second and the third are silver and bronze winners.

Olga: What’s that, Stephen? Have you got a new camera?

Stephen: Yeah. Just what I’ve always wanted. It’s a Christmas present from my parents.

Olga: Really? I’m so happy for you. I love presents. I wish I were a queen, then I would get presents every day.

Stephen: Believe it or not, Olga, but this is what happens in real life. I’ve read a magazine that for Queen Elizabeth, for example, every day is Christmas day.

Olga: You’re kidding!

Stephen: Not at all. And some of the presents are very unusual. Once an American hot-dog firm sent her a big box of hot-dogs with mustard.

Olga: Oh, no! What did she do with them?

Stephen: I have no idea. But it’s clear that presents can be a big problem. Once, when the Queen returned from Canada she brought home a mink coat, a large statue of a horse, a pair of snowshoes, a motor-boat, a piece of iron, a silver jug and a large painting of a power station.

Olga: What does the Queen do with these presents? Where can she put a large statue?

Stephen: There are 600 rooms in Buckingham Palace and the Queen tries to use all of her presents. And she gives many of her presents to museums, especially the British Museum.

Olga: I’d so much like to go to London one day and visit the British Museum and see Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park and Big Ben.

Stephen: I hope your dream will come true.

The Discovery of America

In our days everybody knows what the word “America” means. First of all it is the name of the country — the United States of America — or just America. And then America is the name of two continents – North America and South America. These two continents, North and South America, form the part of the world called America.

Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. “In fourteen hundred and ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue… “This is a song that many children learn about Christopher Columbus and his journey to America.

We don’t know much about the man. He was born in Italy but lived in Spain for a long time. He was a seaman and made many sea voyages. In 1492 the King and the Queen of Spain gave him money to go to India. He decided to sail west as he was sure that our planet was round. And after sailing 4000 miles [mailz] (6400 kilometers), he reached some land. Columbus thought that it must be India but it was not. It was a new land – a new continent. It was America — Central America in fact. People began to speak about the land as “the New World”.

Now let’s get some information about the geographical position of the USA. Read and translate the text.

The USA is situated in the central part of the North American continent. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast by the Atlantic Ocean. The area of the USA is over nine million square kilometres. The continental part of the USA consists of two highland regions and two lowland regions. The highland regions are the Appalachian Mountains in the east, and the Cordillera and the Rocky Mountains in the west. The highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains is 2,037 metres high. The highest peak of the Cordillera in the USA is 4,418 metres. Between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains are the central lowlands, which are called the prairie and the eastern lowlands, called the Mississippi valley. The five

Great Lakes, between the USA and Canada, are joined together by short rivers or canals, and the Saint Lawrence River joins then to the Atlantic Ocean. In the west of the USA there is another lake called the Great Salt Lake. The main rivers of the USA are Mississippi, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico, the Colorado and the Columbia which flow into the Pacific Ocean, the Saint Lawrence River and the Hudson River, which flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The USA is very large country,

so it has several different climatic regions. The coldest regions are in the north and north-east where much snow falls in winder. The south has a subtropical climate. Hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often bring typhoons. The climate along the Pacific coast is much warmer than that of the Atlantic coast. The region around the Great Lakes is known for its changeable weather.

The USA is a highly developed industrial country, and its agriculture is highly mechanized. Coal is found in many parts of the country: in the Cordillera Mountains, in the state of Kansas, in the east near Birmingham and Pittsburgh. The state of Illinois is especially rich in coal. Iron is mined near the Great Lakes and in other areas. The USA has rich oil-fields in California, Texas, Alaska and other regions. It holds first place in the capitalist world for production of coal, iron, oil and natural gas. The heavy industries are for the most past in the Middle West, in the region of the Great Lakes, around Detroit and Chicago, in the north-eastern states and near Birmingham. The automobile industry and all kinds of machine-building are highly developed especially in and near Detroit, in California and in the areas of heavy industry. Ship-building is developed along the Atlantic coast and also in San Francisco and Seattle on the Pacific coal. The textile industry is concentrated in the north- east, in Boston and other cities; but it is especially well developed in the South, where much cotton is grown, in the Mississippi valley. The USA has a highly developed railway system. It also has the best system of roads in the capitalist world. The Great Lakes and the rivers, especially the Saint Lawrence River and the Mississippi, are used for transport. American agriculture produces more food products than any other capitalist country. Much of then are exported. In the Middle West very much grain is grown. Fresh fruit and vegetables come all the year round from the southern regions, especially Florida, from California and south-western states. The highlands in the west of the country are famous for their cattle-farming. Poultry-farming and vegetable growing are concentrated in the countryside near all the big cities.
