Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music. It was developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil at the beginning of the 16th century.
The most widely accepted origin of the word capoeira comes from the Tupi words ka’a (“forest”) paũ (“round”).
The slaves used to hide their capoeira trainings from their owners by assigning them religious dance movements in the forest.
It emphasizes flowing movements rather than fixed stances; the Ginga, a rocking step, is usually the focal point of the technique.
There are many capoeira courses, each course differs from the other by the master and different aspects of capoeira.
I trained in group “Cordao de Ouro” and its leader is
Mestre Suassuna
Capoeira ranking is represented by rope colors (Corados).
The ‘Cordao de Ouro’ group ranking order is similar to the colors in Brazil flag (from outside to inside).
My group name – Cordao de Ouro.
cordao – rope, Ouro – gold.
The name is about “the last rope” , when the grand master with the white rope is dead, he gets the golden rope.
My experience:
I did capoeira everyday from fourth grade until my induction more or less.
My rank was Monitor, its like the master’s aid when he trained groups. also I trained groups of my own as a job.
