Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rise unusually early one morning to meet a young woman named Helen Stoner who fears that her stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, is threatening her life. Helen’s twin sister died almost two years earlier, shortly before she was to be married. Helen had heard her sister’s dying words, “The speckled band!” but could not decode their meaning.
Maine character: I chose to describe the character Helen stoner; Helen is thirty-years-old, but her hair is grey. During her first meeting with Holmes and Dr. Watson, they noticed that her eyes were frightened like those of a haunted animal.
Secondary character: Roylott is a huge, intimidating figure with a large wrinkled face, and tanned from the sun. His eyes are deep-set and bile-shot, and his nose is thin and high. Conan Doyle relates Roylott’s appearance as that of an old bird of prey.
I recommend this book for teenagers who like adventure and mystery because this book is filled with tension and is a not a scary book, Moreover, it is a short book for teenagers who like mystery.
