Today I want to tell you about the great Sherlock Holme’s book “The Hound of the Baskervilles” which was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a famous British writer and the writer of all Sherlock Holme’s books and stories. The story is a detective fiction/ crime novel and one of many Sherlock Holmes stories.
The story is told from the prespective of Dr.Watson, the sidekick of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes, who tries to solve the mystery of the legend about the hound of the Baskervilles.
plot
The story starts with Dr. James Mortimer who went to London from Dartmoor in England’s West Country. He asks Sherlock for help after the death of Sir Charles Baskerville. Then he is telling them about the legend or rather the curse of the Baskerville family.
The legend:
Many years ago in 1742 one of the younger Baskerville’s members, Hugo Baskerville did a horrible thing (I won’t elaborate). As a result, he got eaten by a huge hound. From now on many of Baskerville’s members died in unusual ways some even say supernatural!
Dr. Mortimer tells them that he found near the death area something weird and strange, huge hound footsteps! In addition, he asks them if they are willing to come to the Baskerville Hall in purpose to defend the next owner of the Baskerville Hall, Sir Henry while solving the mystery. Sherlock agrees.
The meeting:
Their meeting was weird, for example, Sir Henry’s boot got stolen and he got a warning letter and even someone followed them. But strangely after all this weird stuff, Sherlock for some reason tells them that he won’t come with them to the Baskerville Hall but asks Watson if he is willing to come and defend Sir Henry in the dangerous Baskerville Hall and he agrees.
Watson, Sir Henry, and Dr.Mortimer finally came to the scary dark Hall which was surrounded by moors. From this point, Watson and Henry meet some amazing and very interesting characters such as The butler Barrymore and his wife, the Stapletons siblings, Frankland, and many more.
For questions like:
Where is Sherlock?
How Sir Charles died?
Who is the villain?
or
What actually happened?
I highly recommend you to read the book by yourself.
Characters:
Watson: He is a tall, thin man who has a mustache. Also smart
and brave and someone who is not afraid to take risks.
Dr.Mortimer: A loyal and nice man. He has a dog and uses a walking stick. Very helpful and kind. (has no appearance description).
My favorite character is Beryl (“Jack’s sister”). she is brave and can stick to her opinion. she is pretty and smart. She put others as her top priority. I love her because of her personality and actions.
My least favorite character is Sherlock. Although I love him usually in this story his actions were stupid and 2 of his miscalculated actions almost killed Sir Henry!
The chosen cover:
I chose this cover because I think it shows one of the main criticism the story is trying to tell. It means that although this is not something so supernatural their fear made them think like this. One of the characters described that perfectly, he said that Charles probably died because he saw a regular dog, but his fear (from the legend) made him afraid and as a result, he ran for his life.
recommendation:
To sum up, I highly recommend you reading this book, this is the type of story which during reading it, you manage to step into the shoes of the detectives. It’s an excellent, very tense detective story. That I personally think you must read at some point.
The End.
