5- The novella opens with a description of the character of the protagonist Santigo. An old and poor fisherman. And in the main situation – for eighty-four days he has not caught a single fish and now he is about to go on a significant and fateful trip to the sea to try his luck.He is joined by the boy Manolin, between whom a personal and very special relationship of a mentor is forged The area is a Cuban fishing village. The old man is not very popular and is portrayed as a ridiculous figure in the eyes of the environment.
