The “Caretos de Podence” are typical of the North of Portugal and have been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 2019.

This tradition is very old and was associated with the entrance of Spring.

In the center of the country we have the Carnival of Torres Vedras. Here traditions are different. Floats and fun “Matrafonas” are used, which are men dressed as women with many wigs and makeup in an exaggerated way.

In the south of the country, traditions are also different. Here satire is used as a way to celebrate Carnival. Politicians are the preferred target!
