Learning Goals

By the end of the e-book lesson, students will be able to…

1. effectively cite their sources in MLA format.
2. take pieces of writing from scholarly documents without plagiarizing.
3. write a clear, authentic, and correct bibliography.

What is a citation?

What is plagiarism and how do I prevent myself from plagiarizing?

If you are citing inside the body of your writing, make sure you include :

• quotations around the part of the text you are referencing
• the author and the page number from the article, in parentheses, at the end of the quote.

If you use the author’s name in the same sentence as the quote you took from their article, you do not have to include their name at the end. You only have to include the page number. (shown in the next two pages)

According to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, plagiarizing is:

• “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own”
• “to commit literary theft”

When using words, phrases, and sentences from a specific source, you must give that source credit by using MLA Format.

Remember to use…

• quotations
• the author’s name
• the page number the quote is found on
