David mows the lawn. His mom gives him a dollar. He has a dollar. A whole dollar.

2

He walks down the street like a millionaire. “I have a whole dollar,” he says to himself. “That is a lot of money. I can buy so many things.”

3

“Grocer,” says David. “How many pineapples can I buy with a dollar?”

“One,” says the grocer. “Shall I wrap it up for you?”

4

“Oh no,” says David. “If I buy the pineapple, I won’t be able to buy a keychain.”

5

David walks on to the hardware store. “Sir,” he says, “how much is that keychain?”

“The one with the gold and blue dolphins?”

“Yes, that one.”

6

“That is two dollars.”

“I have only one.”

“Okay, then for you it’s a dollar. Shall I ring it up?”

“Oh, no,” says David. “I was just asking. If I buy the keychain I cannot buy a superhero poster for my room.”

7

David stops at the photo store. “How much is the poster of my favorite superhero?”

“This one?”

“Yes.”

“It is three dollars.”

“I have only one.”

“I can sell you a postcard of New York.”

8

“No thank you,” says David.

9

“David, is that you?” asks his mother.

“Yes, Mom. I went for a walk to buy something with my dollar.”

“What did you buy?”

“A dream, Mom. I bought a dream.”
