Introduction

There are many reasons why I want to fly to Latvia such as the many amazing places to visit there, the culture and the people. However, there is one most important reason why I want to write this project and visit Latvia, my grandmother lives there.  Two years ago I was there too, and I didn’t have enough of this beautiful place. I really want to learn more and go there again soon.

Three famous places in Latvia

Freedom Monument

This is a memorial located in Riga, Latvia, honouring soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. (1918–1920). It is considered an important symbol of the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Latvia. Unveiled in 1935, it was built according to the scheme “Mirdzi kā zvaigzne!” (“Shine like a star!”) submitted by Latvian sculptor Kārlis Zāle. Construction works were financed by private donations.

This 42-metre (138 ft) high monument of granite, travertine, and copper often serves as the focal point of public gatherings and official ceremonies in Riga.

12

Sigulda

This is a town in the Vidzeme Region of Latvia 53km(less than an hour’s drive) from the capital city Riga, Sigulda with its stunning scenery, ancient castles and incredible adventures is the opposite to city life. For centuries, painters, poets and lovers have found inspiration amidst the lovely landscapes of Sigulda, and visitors continue to embrace this exceptionally beautiful part of Latvia today. Sigulda’s forested valleys are steeped in myths and legends. They are a treat for the eyes in all seasons, especially the autumn when the leaves blaze gold and red. Sigulda also offers fascinating glimpses into life in medieval Europe in Sigulda’s castle, and it is top destination for adventure activities. You can bungee jump, use the Aerodium to fly,  or sly down a  bobsleigh.

13

Rundāle Palace

This is one of the two major baroque palaces built for the Dukes of Courland in what is now Latvia. The palace was built in two periods, from 1736 until 1740 and from 1764 until 1768. It is situated at Pilsrundāle, 12 km west of Bauska.

In modern times a school was located in the palace until 1978.  In 1972, Rundāle Palace Museum was established, and the restoration of the palace started. In the spring of 2015 it was announced that restoration work in the Rundāle Palace was complete. Total restoration costs from 1972 until 2014 were estimated to be 8,420,495 euros.

The palace is one of the major tourist destinations in Latvia. It is also used for the accommodation of notable guests, such as the leaders of foreign nations. The palace and the surrounding gardens are now a museum.

Conclusion

There are so many reasons why Latvia is an attractive tourist destination. Some of them are the beautiful places a tourist can find in Latvia such as, Rundāle Palace and Freedom Monument. Moreover, the town of Sigulda is also not only beautiful, but it offers great activities such as bungee jumping, hiking and bobsleighing.

Latvia is a quiet place that allows everyone a good rest, with interesting attractions. The place seems hardly changed, and there are many traditions that people live by. In addition, it is a good place for people who like beer and good food.

To sum up, for all the reasons I have raised above and many more Latvia is a good place for a 7-day vacation.

Reflection

  • What did you like best about working on this project? Why?
I liked writing about the places in Latvia because of the beautiful views.
  • What did you like least about working on this project? Why?
The part I like least was reading everything in English, because it was not easy for me.

  • What part of the project was the most difficult for you? Why?
Writing the introduction and conclusion was difficult because I had to do it by myself and not just copy paste.

What part of the project was the easiest for you? Why?
Writing about a famous man was easy because I know this person and all the videos he made in the past.

  • In what ways has doing this project made you:
    * a more independent learner I learned how to research about countries.
    * more responsible for your learning I did everything by myself.
    * more confident in yourself I now believe I can write long things in English.

* more organized I learned how to organize my time for the project.

  • In what areas do you think that doing this project has helped your English improve? How?
    * reading I read better.
    * writing I can now write long passages.
    * spelling I write with fewer mistakes.
    * vocabulary I know a lot more words.
    * Speaking It helped me speak better.
  • What did you learn about yourself as a learner from doing this project? What I learned about myself is that nothing is difficult. You just have to spend time and feel and everything will go well.
