I knew who Shimon Gershon was long before he knew me.
He was a star football (soccer) player in Israel for many years, spending most of his career at Hapoel Tel Aviv, following by a move to Beitar Jerusalem.

While still playing football, he was infected by the music bug and began recording catchy songs.

5
In addition to this, he is also a best-selling writer of books for children.
6
I met him when he became the owner of my favorite coffee house, The Arrcafe in Ramat Hahayal. I even wrote a book about it.
We became friendly. After all, I’m one of his most loyal customers.

But yesterday was special. I saw Shimon behind the coffee machine. “What are you doing?” I asked him. “Are you short on labor?”
“No”, he answered. “I am finally learning to prepare coffee at my own coffeehouse.”
I figured that I had chanced on a historic moment. “Make me a coffee”, I said.

“Here’s the deal”, he said. “I’ll make you a coffee, but no complaining. Good, bad whatever, it’s on the house. But the deal is you drink the whole cup.”
I’m always ready for an adventure. Especially when it involves a free cup of coffee.

He slaved.
He toiled.
14
He ground.
He steamed.
16
He frothed.
He poured.

And out it came.
Perhaps not the loveliest coffee in the world.
But still….

I fulfilled my part of the bargain.
It was very good coffee, for a novice, I must say.
And besides, Shimon made it for me!
