I don’t know why
I’m just a fly

I could’ve been a horse, a Norse,
A singing sow, a mellow cow,

I might have been an elephant
Or even more significantly
Mother Goose or fluffy Eider
Li’l Miss Muffet’s  sitting spider

A meely eel
A clapping seal

A mosquito
Or even just a lousy louse
On the collar of a mouse

But then again
There has to be
A reason why or
Higher
purpose
to explain

Why I am not a
Butterfly
Or ancient tortoise.

Someday, I know

When cold winds blow
I shall grow old
(So I’ve been told)

On my last wings
The angel sings

And then draws nigh

To tell me why

I’m just a very
