Norway and Oslo- geografi

You can find Norway on the north part of the Scandinavian eye land. Our neighbour countries are Sweden, Finland and Russia. Norway is surrounded by ocean; we have the second longest coast in the world (after Canada). Our coast is 102 936 kilometres long. If you drag Norway’s coast around the world, you would be able to drag it 2 and a half time around the world. Norway is parted in five regions, østlandet, sørlandet, vestlandet, trøndelag and nord- norge.

Oslo:

The capital in Norway is Oslo. This is the largest city in Oslo in square kilometres. Oslo has a very variated climate. We have everything from shopping malls to our beautiful forests. Oslo is known for “nordmarka”. Nordmarka is a huge forest area. If you want to go for a Sunday walk in beautiful surroundings, this is were to go. But if you want to go to a restaurant or if you want to go shopping with your friends, I would have taken the trip to Majorstuen.

Sports:

Most Norwegian people is very active. We love our beautiful mountains and wonderful nature and we love to take a walk, in beautiful surroundings. It’s a saying “Norwegians are born with skies on their feet”. And even though it’s not true I believe there’s some truth in it, because most Norwegians love to go skiing. We do a lot of different sports in Norway such as football, skiing, down hill skiing, handball and athletics. Norway was crowned as the best sport nation in 2018. One of the sports were especially good at is skiing. We have a lot of skiing stars is Norway for instant Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Therese Johaug and Heidi Weng. Therese Johaug (31) has won 62 gold medals in the world cup, and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (23) has won 32 gold medals in the world cup.

Norway is also very good at playing handball. And the lady’s national team have won 27 medals in total (since 1946), 12 gold medals, 9 silver and 6 bronze in Olympian championships, World championships and European championships. The coach, Thorir Hergeirsson is from Island and have been their coach since 2009. The team captain is Stine Bredal Oftedal and she plays for the club Gyor.

The men’s national team have won 2 medals in World championships, European championships and Olympian championships, and both were silver medals. Their coach is Christian Berge.

Even though football is Norway’s most popular sport were not very good at it. And we haven’t won a lot. But we have one of the best female football players in the world, Ada Hegeberg. Ada Hegeberg won the “ballon d´or” in 2018. She was the first women to win this price.

Norway is also very proud of the three athletic- stars Henrik Ingebritsen (28 years), Filip Ingebritsen (26) and Jakob Ingebritsen (19). They are brothers and all of them are some of the best runners in the world. Jakob has won 14 gold medals in total; Filip has won 9 gold medals and Henrik has won 2 gold medals. Henrik is one of the best European athletics at middle-distance runs and he has been, through his whole career. Filip has the European record on 1500 meters and had the Norwegian record on the same distance, but then his brother, Jakob, crushed his Norwegian record, but not the European one. His time was 3:36.21, and that was a new Norwegian and Nordic record. They have now made a TV- series about the brothers and their life.    Bilderesultat for brødrene ingebrigtsen   The Ingebritsen- brothers

Norwegian traditions

Norway has through the years developed different traditions and manners that may be weird or surprising to the rest of the world, here are some of them:

17th of May

Norway`s national day is 17th of May. Children walk in different parades round the capital of Norway waving with the Norwegian flag and singing songs. The Norwegian “bunad” is a traditional outfit worn on special occasions such as confirmations, birthday’s, Christmas and 17th of May. Many Norwegians spend as much as 50 000 NOK (around 5000 dollars) on these suits. They are usually gifted to a person when they are 14 years old, to wear on their confirmation day.

Russ

“Russ” is a commonly known term for almost all Norwegian people. Russ is all the students that are graduating from high school driving around a bus from the 1st of May to 17th of May, partying before the exam period. They wear the same pair of normally red dungarees for the whole month and are not supposed to wash them. They have their own paper card with their name and picture printed on it called “russekort”, kids collect these cards throughout the whole month and see who got the most cards in the end.

The 17th of May all of the Russ gather and walk around Oslo in a parade throwing away what is left of their russekort on the ground.

2.Another thing you can do is travel north and see the northern lights they are very beautiful.

They are lights in the sky that have blue shimmery effect. Sadly, you can only see them by the polar circle. They come when the electrons and protons from the sun get thrown to the earth and they collide with atmospheric gas and then the light comes about between 80 kilometres also but rarely over 500 kilometres above earth surface. The northern lights can come in all sorts of colours from ultraviolet too infrared the colour depends on how the energy level in the particles and the composition of the atmospheric gas. The most common colours are green, red, and blue.

Food traditions

Some of Norway’s food traditions involve a lot of fish. One of our main fish dishes is “lutefisk”, this course is made from an aged stockfish or a dried and salted whitefish and lye. It is made a very traditional way and the finished results leaves us with a gelatinous-like texture.

When Christmas season comes around Norwegian people buy a traditional flatbread called lefse. It is usually a common side dish to see on the table on Christmas or New Year’s Eve, some people also have it at their wedding. The batter is made from flour, potatoes, butter and milk, the toppings may vary from different places and different times.

Fårikål” is Norway’s national food-dish, it is typically cooked around atum and is made from mutton or lamb. The taste is very subtle and mixes well together with the potatoes and carrots. Fårikål is a popular air food or cruise food.

After the Christmas dinner most, Norwegian citizens start of the night with the famous “krumkake”. The dessert cookie made from butter, eggs, sugar and flour is often stuffed with jam, chocolate, cream and something called “multekrem”. You can also find yourself enjoying a delicious krumkake at a party or brunch.

Very similar to meatballs, “kjøttkaker” is a common dinner served with brown sauce, potatoes and carrots. It is a very simple Norwegian dish, but it is very delicious.

You can eat salmon in many was either cooked, fried or smoked. One of the most popular ways of preparing salmon in Norway is “gravlaks” which is smoked salmon that has been marinated. It is usually served with potatoes, vegetables and some sauce.
