I ́m a refugee from Afghanistan. My name is Bashir Yousufi and I speak Dari. I grew up with my family in Kabul.
A typical day in my country was people shooting and killing each other. I always felt very scared.
My home country was unsafe and dangerous, when I was there I never really had the opportunity to go to the school because it was very risky for me at the time
I came by ship along with 2000 people.
When I left Afghanistan, I went to Christmas Island.
When I came here I did not know how to read, write or speak English.
At the school in the detention centre I saw a dictionary so I borrowed it to teach myself English. In Australia I have been attending school for 3 years. I’m really proud of this school.
The reason why I left my country was because my father was killed by a Taliban and I was forced to leave my country at the age of 12.
When I grow up I want to become an accountant.
I actually did find a friend who could speak English a little bit. His name is Mohsen. He was with me on Christmas Island.
Life is quite good, safe and there are many opportunities. It is easier than life in Afghanistan.
For fun, Mohsen and I walk around the Opera House.
