(chapters 1-3) I am a proud mom of one, My name is Dianne, I have a husband named Chuck, as previously mentioned a daughter named Melody. she is different and special, she has a disability called cerebral palsy, she can’t move certain parts of her body she can’t walk nor talk. I sometimes wonder what she’s thinking, but I don’t know if I will be able to here her thoughts or anything else. I know that she is a very smart girl and special girl, and I don’t know if she will ever be able to prove it. Sometimes she even brings tears to my eyes when I see her struggle, to make matters worse even doctors don’t understand her or even me at times.
(4-6)We always go to see special doctors to see if they can help with Melody.I don’t know what happens to her, but she always seems to zone out in a way. When she was just five, it was time for her to go to school and we went to a specialist to test how smart she was and the bad news started there, of course the doctor would say that she would never be able to walk, talk or even take care of herself, I was so sad. Things haven’t really changed either every time we go we get no news or bad news, I wish something good could just happen. last time was no different as he said the same as all the other doctors, I think that they are just all so lucky with where they are in life. On the other hand, I am very thankful for our neighbor and good friend Mrs Violet Valencia she has helped us so much over the years watching Melody after school, while me and Chuck are at work.
(7-9)Things have been a little crazy for the last little bit, first Melody had a tornado tantrum at school and I quickly came in (since it was my off day) to a class of screaming children I quickly realized that they were screaming, because they’re teacher was teaching them things they already knew. Then Melody fell out of her chair While watching the Wizard Of Oz I don’t know how though, because I was sleeping and the only reason I woke up was, because of butterscotch barking and hitting the door. Then I found out, I was pregnant, I felt strange for a long time so I finally found out what that was about, then I broke the news to Melody, and chuck had to start doing some of my duties. Then she was born, we named her Penny and she was healthy, fine and perfect, thank god. Me and Chuck had a few arguments, but everything got better and we got to have some nice moments with Penny.
(10-12)Man, am I ever feeling what it is like to have a baby, With Melody. At least I have gotten used to lifting Melody onto her toilet seat, but changing Penny’s diaper is a challenge of it’s own compared to Melody. It has also been difficult to know what Melody has been thinking lately, I just wish she could talk it would make life so much easier. It has gotten better though, she gets to go to inclusion classes and hangout with non disabled kids, It gets better to, she actually made a friend, her name is Rose. I am so excited she is making friends and most importantly a difference, for once she feels normal.
(13-15)A few week ago Violet our neighbor entered a essay contest, she won first place and 6 tickets to the new aquarium in town. This was really cool, since Melody got to invite a friend to the aquarium, because there was 6 tickets and 5 of us, she invited her new friend Rose and she joined as the sixth person.
Unfortunately a few girls from school were there and disturbed a little bit of the fun, but Violet took care of that. I guess Melody was inspired by Violet, since she wanted to do a report on Stephen Hawking, and how he does normal things while being disable. She must have decided to look for a computer specialized for her after seeing Stephen Hawking and , her friend Rose get a computer so that must have something to do with it to. She was looking for a computer that suits her with her other friend Claire at school, and she was so excited to show her find to Violet after school, that when I went to pick her up Violet immediate told me “this is long overdue”. I agreed and I had to sign many documents and paper or other things like that. Finally it arrived. It arrived on the Wednesday before Christmas. Violet went to get it as soon as it arrived, and by the time I was there they had set it up Although I did call in to see how it was going. Then when Me and Chuck went to pick Melody and her sister up, we opened the door and Melody typed and it said “Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad. i am so happy.” she followed up with “I love you” and I broke down, Chuck recorded it all.
(16-18) For once Melody can talk and make normal human to human contact with everybody, she could barely wait for the holidays to end so she brag to her friends at school. There is still bad things for her to go through though, as she is still left all alone during recess at school, she just stands alone in the corner unless somebody stops by. On the bright side, she can participate in the Whiz kids competition, because of the Medi-talker, and she was even the best in the her class’s practice round with a perfect score, I was so happy. She had a great chance to make it so she practised a lot until the tryout.
(19-21)The past week has been really repetitive, it has been the same routine everyday, Melody just goes to school, stays after school, practises more at Violets house, and repeats. It’s probably better to stay calm for now until the Whizz kids tryouts. That came really quick and went faster, and I was amazed. Not only did Melody qualify she got all the questions right again, apparently she is the only person to get a perfect score on both the practice round and the tryout, I was so proud.
(22-24) Well, now that she officially made it has been constant studying, constant practise where ever she went, and then it was the big day. There was a lot of people there, and a lady escorted the team to the stage, there was a lot of fancy dressed kids there and I couldn’t wait, then the competition started after an introduction of Melody. and every question went by faster and faster I was a little nervous, but I was confident in Melody and the rest of the team, eventually there were less and less questions and they won the first round!
(25-27) The final round has begun the host stating that the scoring will be the same, but the questions will be harder. The competition was very even we were down a few points and they tied it up it came down to a math question and Melody along with the rest of her team got it right and they won! Everybody was over joyed. Unfortunately that was where the fun ended,
we went to a restaurant so the kids could celebrate and Claire threw up after somebody asked her why she’s friends with Melody. And then Melody broke down thinking that everybody was going to be mean to her since it was her picture on the cover.
(28-30) Wow, lately all the kids have been under so much pressure, they have to learn about oh so much, they have to get forms signed, all sorts of papers, plane tickets, and everything else. They are just kids after all. It’s worth it though, it’s perhaps an experience we might never have again. Of course on the day of the flight we got ready, suitcase, passport, and we even took care of butterscotch. When we got to the airport, we heard the horrible news. Despite the weather being clear here, the weather in Boston was bad they had 5 inches of snow on the ground, and no planes could go in or out. We asked for other flights, but nothing. Then we asked where the rest of the team was and they had left earlier than us in the morning flight. Heartbreak, it was the only thing our whole family and Mrs Valencia could feel the whole family was sad. On top of that when I was backing out of the driveway for Melody to go to school Penny was behind the car and I hit her, backing up despite multiple warning from Melody, it was just a bad time.
(31-33) Thank Goodness everything with Melody, turned out just fine, aside from her broken leg. Also things were getting back to normal, but one thing had to be cleared up. Why was Melody left behind? They said that, she would slow them down and that she wouldn’t make it in time anyways, whether it’s true or not, I don’t know. All I know is that Melody is special, always was and, always will be.
