Edirne is a city in the northwest of Turkey. In the center of the city, the 16th-century Selimiye Mosque, built by architect Mimar Sinan, is considered an Ottoman classic, with a large dome and 4 minarets. The Turkish and Islamic Art Museum, inside the mosque complex, has religious and ethnographic displays dating from the Ottoman era. The nearby 15th-century Üç Şerefeli Mosque has 3 balconies on one of its minarets.
The early-15th-century Old Mosque has 9 domes, and features large Arabic calligraphy inscriptions on the walls. To the south is the Great Synagogue of Edirne, built in the early 20th century and now open again after major restorations. Across the Tundzha River is the Sultan Beyazit II Mosque complex. It now contains the Museum of Health, which explores the history of Islamic medicine, inside the 15th-century former psychiatric hospital. The stone remains of Edirne Palace, from Edirne’s time as an Ottoman capital, are to the north. The Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival takes place in the stadium at Sarayiçi, north of the city.
