American Revolution, also called United States War of Independence or American Revolutionary War, (1775–83), insurrection by which 13 of Great Britain’s North American colonies won political independence and went on to form the United States of America. The colonies fought the British Army. The colonies’ army was lead by General george Washington.
During the American Revolution, Washington lead the colonial forces to victory over the British and became a national hero. George Washington fought in the French and Indian War, and gained valuable experience during that war.
There were many battles and fights during the American Revolution. The beginning fight was at Lexington and Concord. The next decisive battle was at Saratoga, this was seen as a turning point and the Colonies were seen as having a legitimate chance at winning the war. Finally, the conclusion of the war was reached at the Colonial victory at Yorktown.
