When the doctor arrived, Jim hided in the near room of that abandoned house, into an empty wardrobe.
The doctor visited Tom and he decided it was better if Tom went to the hospital for a few weeks.
Then, when the doctor was gone away, I’ve decided with Jim to run away and finally reach Cairo.
Two days later, after we had prepared everithing for the journey, I went to the hospital to see how Tom felt.
I found Tom good, so I felt better and ready to go to Cairo.
At first we decided to go by feet, but nearby an abandoned house we saw an old rowing boat: a lucky gift by destiny; we obviously decided to seal again into the Mississippi.
It was better than the raft or even the canoe, but the biggest danger where boats, the same reason why the old raft was destroyed.
There were three days that we were sailing and, at the third day’s evening, we stopped into a little town.
That evening we arranged a fire into the swamp near the town and we felt asleep.
The next morning we gone to the town to find out where we were, and people told us that Cairo was at two days of sailing into Mississippi by there.
hat day we gone through the village hopin for someone to give us some food, we weren’t asking for nothing special and so we found five pieces of bread and some apples.
That night we slept again around the campfire when, suddendly, I heard some strange noises coming nearly us; so I woke up and I saw two robbers while stealing our food.
When they saw me they were like surprised and so they ran away through the swamp.
Fortunately Jim woked up and he started chasing the robbers, stopping them. We found they were the “Duke” and the “King”; that’s why they were so surprised to see us.
The next morning we continued our sailing from that city and, two days later, we found a city that we thought was Cairo, unfortunately it wasn’t, but a local man told us that Cairo was a mile over that city; so we hadn’t waited a minute more and we restarted sailing to Cairo.
An half an hour later we finally reached Cairo and in our eyes was happiness and satisfaction about our win; we finally had reached it!
We stayed there two weeks after we took a decision: Jim woulded reach the north to find his family; I woulded stay there and find a good job, maybe on a boat or maybe in a farm, I wanted something calm that didn’t need a school preparation; and I did! A month later a boat’s chief was searching a sailor man (or better a sailor boy in my situation me), and I got that job.
A few years later I met the woman of my life; who becomed your grandmother.
About Sawyer, I knew he returned in his town and he continued to be a fisherman. It’s been a while that I don’t see or I talk with him, I think where he could be right now.
