One day, while a pardoner was riding his horse along with his companions,he decided to share an old tale with them. Particularly due to the fact that it had a moral conclusion.

This tale speaks about the three young men whom lived in Flanders. While in a drunken stage, they decided to achieve immortality with an impossible mission:they wanted to escape death and live forever so they set a plan to find the Death and kill him.

Coincidentally, they met a very old man who has lived for a long time. After threating him,the old man finally revealed where the men could find him, a special tree just outside the village.

Instead of finding the tree, they found a treasure placed next to a flower. They decided that they would send the youngest of the three back to the village for food and wine to celebrate the treasure.

While he was gone, the remaining two decided there would be more treasure if they split it between them two, and so began plotting to kill him once he returned.

The two men killed him and began drinking the wine and eating the food when they both collapsed to the ground. The youngest of the three was also very selfish and had poisoned the wine that they drank and so all three men died.
The pardoner wanted his companions to learn that no one has power and can play God. He offers them peace by giving money to the people.
