This book is dedicated to you,
my friend the poet, Avihai Kimhai.
We barely know each other.
One day he calls me, he says he received my phone from a common friend.
He tells me that he intends to go to Thessaloniki with his wife.
his father was born there.
He was never there before and they will stay there two weeks.
He asks me what I recommend.
I don’t know much about its history and I don’t really look for important sites and places to see.
I’m not looking for what is needed to do.
Besides, you can find all that information in Google.
I am searching to get excited, to fall in love with the place and the culture.
I want to touch the soul, to reveal a bit of its magic and let it fly.
We talk on the phone and he feels my enthusiasm.
In the end I tell him what XALARA is (I’ll explain that later on )
And he likes that a lot.
Meanwhile, I send him links to my two internet books on “OURBOOX”, about my trips to Thessaloniki .
There is a bit of everything there.
http://www.ourboox.com/books/the-soul-and-the-seagulls-of-thessaloniki/
http://www.ourboox.com/books/spring-in-thessaloniki-and-in-my-heart-
He reads my books and writes that this is exactly the atmosphere he is looking for.
It makes me happy.
He is probably searching and collecting information for that trip from all sorts of sources.
But since he is a wonderful poet and a spiritual person,
I feel that he is also looking for something other than just the facts and sites.
The first exam arrives.
I choose for him one of my favorite songs (a tough song for someone who is not accustomed to Greek music)
and I translated it for him to Hebrew.
Oh, this wonderful singer Dimitris Mitropanos with his “killing” Zabikiko
about a woman he loved in Salonika. He searches for her in the streets of the city
with a moon and a violin and he yearns for the dream, her and the bow of the violin.
Oh how wonderful this pain is.
The Greeks are strong in songs of love and pain, drama or simply just to so cry, fall down and beg for love.
They even made a God for love, Eros.
You can hear in their music the tormented soul, the joy, the jealousy the desperation and the hope.
KALIMERA, I write to him:
The music, the words and the dance (especially the Zapikiko dance) are the heart of Greece..
Here I translated for you, one of the most beautiful Zapikiko songs, sang by the amazing singer Dimitris Mitropanos,
who was a famous Greek singer, known in his the performance of the music of Laiku, Rebetiko and modern Waiku.
I will look for you in Thessaloniki
As I was born from an emperor fate
An ancient Macedonian womb gave me life
I fight with an empty arrows case, with the winter
From the heart of the castle Platamonas
As I’m already being led by a path that comes from Fanery
There is a Salonika alley that is holding me there
Come one night for one night to get the promise
Before a northern wind erases it with a sponge
I am looking for you
I am looking for you in Thessaloniki in the dawn
Your glance is missing from dawn’s colors
I am looking for you
I am looking for you with a violin and a moon
The dream, you and the violin bow are missing.
As I am already getting drunk from the wine of monks from Aion Oros (a holy mountain in Thessaloniki)
And I become sad by the Istanbul distress
Find the knife that separates us into two
And come here to the castle of sighs.
As the gods at Olympus have already decided on this
They gave the keys to the cold and committed suicide
Now the day wakes up and sleeps alone
With a small engine, a computer and a flute.
“Kalimara,” he writes to me, “you made my day”
And I’m glad.
Not every thing is about music I know.
After all, he is not going to Thessaloniki just from love for Greece and its culture.
He is going there to unite with his roots.
On our first trip to Thessaloniki we took a day tour with a guide named Stella
who lived in Salonika and speaks Hebrew. We spent six hours with her mainly in the Jewish Quarter,
the Jewish Museum, and the synagogue, whose doors were closed in Christmas.
But Stella called from downstairs Rosa Rosa and Rosa opened the synagogue for us and made us a short tour.
I searched for him how to contact with. I highly recommend to do the tour with her.
She also has a lot of information about the Jews of Salonika and their history.
http://www.thessaloniki.co.il/nightlife.html
And since he has no information about his family,
I also recommend him to contact The Jewish heritage of Salonika,
located in Petah Tikva.
They have a lot of information about many families who lived in Salonika and their heritage.
I continue searching and find an interesting article
in Haaretz about the Jews of Salonika
https://www.haaretz.co.il/literature/1.1050103
* In the photo – a book about the history of the Jews of Salonika that our dear friends Kiki, Christos and Dimetra
gave us on our first visit in Thessaloniki
The Jews of Salonika / Avihai Kimhai
Regarding the story of their own Holocaust
The Publishing houses didn’t compete to publish them
And the heroes of the book were erased
That was as well my grandmother’s family
From the side the of my father, who remained in Salonika
I don’t know how they went to their fate
And I only remember the little house
Of my grandfather and grandmother
There, on a small chest of drawers
Were the colored photographs of
Strangers
Maybe I once asked who they were
-
Translated by Shulamit Sapir-Nevo
On another day I write to him: To start a morning with the beautiful songs of Salonika
and I translated that song for him.
Thessaloniki-Dimitris Mitropanos
I’ll take my car
And in my pocket, pocket money
And tonight at midnight
I’ll be in Salonika
Thessaloniki you are the only one
and there is no one like you in the world
That has your beauty and your grace.
Thessaloniki witch,
You pull like a magnet
Thessaloniki My Mother
Thessaloniki Sweet.
Here is another nice song
My Thessaloniki Stelios Kazantzidis – Thessaloniki moυ
!Thessaloniki, you are great mother to the needy
.You are the one who gives the finest kids their start
!Thessaloniki, you are great mother to the needy
No matter where I go you’re always in my heart
,Thessaloniki, I will never be without you
!You are my home, I say it and I brag about you
Thessaloniki, oh, however far I wander,
I always keep your sweet name in my memory.
Oh, how I’ve longed to come back close to you from far,
To die in front of that White Tower by the sea.
Thessaloniki, you’re a town that’s full of feeling.
You raise the girls who are the loveliest in sight.
Bohemian evenings, in the alleys songs are pealing,
In every neighborhood the parties go all night.
,Thessaloniki, I will never be without you
!You are my home, I say it and I brag about you
* translated from the internet
Stelios Kazanjidis was a leading Greek singer, who became one of the most prominent symbols
of Greek folk music, Laiku.
He collaborated with many composers in Greece.)
“Many thanks
Beautiful!”, he writes,
and I am happy.
I write him “my pleasure
Show it to your wife.
The best thing is to come to Salonika when you are already in love with her
and you get to know her slowly
Before you will meet. “
He answers me:
“Just like that.
Get to know the bride before the wedding … “
I’m smiling to myself. I Like his answer.
And I have no doubt that he will have a wedding there.
*
During the searches I do for him
I fall in love with the familiar face of Thessaloniki
I see her other eyes, Those who invite me to come closer,
Inviting me to play, inviting me to catch some more of her hidden beauty.
I am excited by the journey he is going to make.
Two weeks of love with an unfamiliar city where he had roots that had been uprooted and he never seen,
But deep in his soul they exist and he goes to water them, to give them light so that they will grow up in him.
And still he does not know what is waiting for him and how much he is going to be in love.
It is only me that feel that way. Because I know the city
and I know him (a bit) through his writing – his poems.
I feel it through the way he looks at places he is attaches to them ,
Loves them and carries pain because of them.
The simplicity he writes – is the roots of his Greek Salonika roots
that he has but he still does not know.
But I, who admire the Greek poetry , the music, the culture,
The language and the people with the heart.
Four years I am studying Greek, breathing Greek, in love.
I already know her and become addicted to her
Because of the simplicity of Greece because of the very primal thing inherent in us,
the real and the most right for us.
Because that’s where I’m connected to my feelings at eye level and heart.
And he, a Jerusalem poet is going to experience an experience that will shake him.
I’m little bit jealous because of him, because he has real Greek roots
And I’m just trying to adopt such roots. 🙂
I can see him in front of my eyes sitting with his wife
in the beautiful Promenade of Salonika,
they both look at the seagulls sliding over the silver marble sea .
They sip coffee and look at the Olympus – the place where the gods live.
Then the muse will come to him and bless him.
I send him another amazing song one evening in Salonika – Antonis Verdes
and happily translate it.
“In your eyes, I search to find my homeland
All my life I’ve been traveling from the your south to your north
I can not defeat my mean loneliness
And I’m looking for you in a city that still has your scent.
One night in Salonika we were both drunk
You told me “Whatever will fall on you I’ll be by your side”
Then we got lost and did not meet again
We were afraid of life.
This night too, the night cries in my eyes
I cry to you that our lives have taken the wrong way
A wild wind freezes my heart
A wind you once called Vardari” (a northern Salonika wind).
* Antonis Vardis was an admired composer and Greek singer.
One of the composers of Greek music composers.
He had a 40-year career in collaboration with well-known Greek singers.
He answers me:
“We saw, we heard, we were delighted.”
And that there is something more fun than sharing something dear
with someone you that you care about
and receiving such a happy feedback.
Slowly Slowly
I am making a trap with gold strings around him
I want him to arrive in love with Thessaloniki.
He didn’t have an easy life and I hope that this visit to Salonika, finding his roots,
Getting to know the city of his father will open a charming and fruitful chapter in his life
and he will come again and again to this city.
Zorba / Avihai Kimhai
Let’s give up the need for a safe and orderly world
And only we shall decide on a date for a journey
That is unlimited in time
And because the East didn’t tempt us
And Greece is far enough and yet closest to our soul
We will go there on a post-army trip.
You’ll probably agree that we start in Thessaloniki
The city where my father was born, but I will not look for the roots
They will discover themselves, and on the city’s seashore
We’ll find an anchor to continue the journey south
Then we’ll travel to stations on the way
We will spend a day or two or more
We’ll talk to the locals in poor English
And we will certainly adopt a few words in Greek
We will take part in the way that their life flows
Like brook water flowing into a stream
And through it our hearts will beat to the rhythm of the local pulse
We will become familiar with the myths and the gods
And perhaps one night when the moon is bathed in the sea
We will meet Selene the goddess of the moon
The sky and sea are reflected in each other’s colors
The white houses that are set with wide windows
Trees and everything that grows on earth
Field animals and house beasts
And all the fish and birds of the sky
I will not be ashamed to dance
-
Translated by Shulamit Sapir-Nevo
“You have your brush, you have your colors,
you paint the paradise, then in you go.”
Nikos Kazantzakis
In a small, smoked tavern after midnight
Full with ouzo, I see him standing up and dancing Zabikiko.
He never did that before, nor do I know if he understands and loves Greek music,
But he has something Greek in his look and in hid blood.
I’m sure that when he dances Zabekiko he’ll dance it properly.
It’s a dance of sadness of life.
And only those who have suffered a lot can dance right Zabeckiko,
the kind that pours the heart on the floor.
Yiannis Parios – Ta vasana mou (Τα βάσανά μου) – My agony
my favorite singer.
My agony is a burden
That I’m taking it here and there
I am looking for a person,
But I can not find him
To share with him
The burden of my soul
Why God my life are like that
They chase me like a robber
And when I look for some light
Some brother hides the light from my face
Love is also a book
Every page is a disaster
Before they come to me
They say goodbye to me
As if I have no heart inside me
*I think this song can suit him.
-
THE GREEK /The Zapekiko Dance
The Zabikiko dance is a difficult dance. No steps. This Dance is dedicated to the inner and mental need
-
of the dancer who recognizes the music and respects .
The dance will never be performed on “cold”, The dancer must first “arrange the head”
-
that the right situation will come, he should reach this situation by drinking. –
The real man is not ashamed to reveal his pain or his weaknesses.
He dislikes all the mass and shallow ways that most of society uses.
He creates an affectionate relationship with the lyrics of the song,
so he chooses the song he will dance, he plans his steps
and practices himself with a lot of respect for the dance.
The dancer does not jump to the right and left, he is in a trance
and when he performs a black-black round, this is the moment when there is a musical bridge,
this is the moment when the singer takes some air.
The great songs of Zabika are heavy and destructive songs:
When the signal is given to your feet, no one else will arise.
No one will interfere with the dance by joining the dance,
so no one will dare disturb or join the dancer.
The Zabekiko dance is a closed and internal dance.
It has nothing to do with those around you in the club –
the dance is individual and private and does not concern anyone else, just dance it –
The dancer turns around himself, and he is actually the center,
the center of the world. Only for him and for his pain that everything “burns”
and he expects nothing from everyone around him.
Never with open arms, half open like an eagle trying to conquer its production,
sometimes bends nervously and desperately almost bowing to its fate.
The mangas is a respectable man, elegantly dressed and lonely.
He is not a rag and a breeze. As defined in a Greek dictionary,
“the mangas is sharp-headed and his behavior suits the men”.

Being a Salonikian is like being a Yerushalmi .
There is a total love and pride for their city no matter those people live
and how beautiful and attractive the places where they are.
Therefore, the Salonikian always sing, play and write nostalgia and love for their Salonika.
Here is one of the most beautiful songs of longing for Salonika. I translated it into Hebrew.
The beautiful Salonika performed by Glykeria

The beautiful Salonika performed by Glykeria
You are the pride of my heart
Thessaloniki is beautiful and sweet
And even though I live in Athens, which irks logic
I sing to you every night
Oh, Thessaloniki is beautiful
Oh, I miss your magic nights
In your narrow alleyways
I lived the sweetest moments
A thousand nights I sang serenades
For all bohemian hearts
You always hold me in your embrace
I always remember you and it hurts me
And even if I’m a little away from you now
In time I’ll be near you.
One morning I write him
Kalimera
To be in Greece and not to go to see a performance of a well known singer
it is just like being in Brazil / England or Spain and not to see there a football game.
*
A word about the Greek music
Just after being for the first time in one of those amazing performances,
I could understand how much respect the Greeks have for their classic music roots.
At 23.30 thousands of people of all ages gather at the performance.
They enter the room in perfect order, sit around the crowded tables,
laden with alcohol, drinks and nuts.
No rush. The night is young and will continue until five in the morning.
At half past one the main famous singer Yiannis Parios
( and in other performances ,some other famous singers) comes on stage.
And then endless amounts of flowers fly all over him, and onto the stage.
The people are very excited and sing along with the performers.
Music is the heart and the soul of this country.
And just as in Brazil the soccer fields have lights on all night, and people play there football,
forgetting the troubles and pain, it’s just like that here.
The music is an endless bottle of wine that the crowds drink drop by drop until dawn,
until their heart and soul are flooded.
The White Tower / Jurgus Zambates / Translation: Leon Siam
I went for a walk in Salonika
And walked around the beach (on the promenade)
Suddenly I see beside me
A beautiful Salonika who passed me
In the white tower
I got her kisses
She also had a house in the area of Kalamaria
Her mother was from the Vardaris region
A Salonika for generations
At Aristotelos we caught a conversation
And walked along Ziminski Street (the main street)
And from then on we became friends
And we became a pair of me and her
Within two months we we got married,
* In the island of Dimitros (the main church in Salonika)
And within two months, man, I became from Athenian to a Saloniki.
Thessaloniki
For the first time Salonika greeted me with a mystical mist.
Although in my eyes she was clear because I had fallen in love with her even before I got there.
Hearing the beautiful stories of my teacher, a proud Salonikian – Leon Siam.
From time to time, during our lessons, he would tell me stories about the culture,
the music, the way of life , the Salonika’s chic.
In my last two lessons with Leon I asked him to
Look at songs that I translated and to correct.
Leon adds two songs he loves about his Salonika.
I want to bring to my friend the poet, the best and the wonders of the Salonika cuisine.
We are in Thessaloniki, through the songs the walk through alleys, and his favorite foods.
Leon got excited and says, “Look how my skin feels excited.”
And believe me he is not excited easily and he’s even a little cynical.
But everything about his Salonika is melting him with
longing and pureness of first love, Like the love from a child to his mother.
The Salonic man calls himself a “man of word and self-respect.”
Sometimes sthey are called κιμααρη – – kimbaris – a polite, civilized and chic man.
And also called μερακλε – – Marrakis – a man with a good taste, including his clothes and shoes.
The men turn to each other by calling καρντασι-kardasi (this is like the Israeli “brother”).
That is why the Greeks call the Salonikians τα καρντασια- ta Cardessia.
Food is a serious issue in Salonika, so Leon tells me. The Salonikians are connoisseurs.
Looking at the small details.
The Saloniki cuisine is considered as more sophisticated then the other in Greece.
That is because it has a Turkish influence and in the end you get to have a wonderful mixture of East and West.
In the area of the Modiano market there are good restaurants including workers’ restaurants,
for example BAZAGIAZI a popular restaurant.
Here are some of the foods that are Thessaloniki
Bougatsa – a morning pastry like a strudel filled with cheese / sweet cream
bouyiourdi – a mixture of cheese with tomatoes and hot peppers
saganaki milia mussels – black clams, a popular delicacy.
Thessaloniki is also famous for its pastries, Leon tells me.
Each bakery has two departments.
One with sweet syrup and all the various baklavas and other pastries influenced by Turkish cuisine.
And in the second are the Delicates.
In first place is the Trigoni Cake -the famous triangular cake of Thessaloniki.
(It is made of filo dough filled with cream).
There are also the profiteroles – cream puff
“The French invented the puffs,” he says and adds proudly, “but the Greeks make them more corrupt.
The Greeks dip them in a sea of chocolate.
The Greek pterosaur (propiterola) is a mutation of the French pterosaur.
The more heavy and sweet the better.
You can taste the rich cream, milk and the whipped cream. “
From our beautiful hotel Electra Palace, on the top floor,
at breakfast we saw how the pigeons floated and disappeared into the mist.
It was impossible to see the sea or the mountain ridges.
It was December, Thessaloniki gleamed with Christmas lights and flying birds
that chase away the cold and gray of the sky.
Here we are with our friends from Israel Heli and Barouch.
We are all invited George parents, (our dear George and his wife Antigoni (from Crete) living in Bristol).
From the first moment we saw George parents, Kiki and Christos, his sister Dimetra and Grandma Demetrola
we felt that they opened the door of their home and their hearts for us.
In one moment they become my second family.
They captured our hearts with their warm heart, their shining eyes, their generosity friendship .
And I feel how I begin to grow roots here.
The second time I arrived to Thessaloniki I am staying at the house of Dimetra in the center of Salonika.
Evening. She’s having a glass of orange juice and I’m a cup of coffee.
We are talking like we’ve known each other for years.
I tell her about the novel I’m going to write.
A love story that takes place in Greece and spreads on Crete, Athens, Rhodes, Salonika and Israel.
It seems to me that I am already build the story generally (or that was what I thought)
and now I want to write the chapters about Thessaloniki.
I have to see and feel the places that I will write about.
“Take me to the Jewish quarter.”
I ask Dimitra and there we go again to see the Jewish Museum and the synagogue.
We walk around the streets, examining the houses and looking for a house that could be suitable for the grandmother’s house in my story.
Like the game of road signs, we are wandering through Thessaloniki according to the landmarks of my future book.
We are looking for a gallery, an authentic restaurant, a church, a ballet school and more.
“Here,” Dimetra tells me, “we are on St. Sophia Street
Γίία σοιια There is also such a church. I’m glad, because the grandmother in my story is Sophia.
I make notes, take a pictures – I want to take as much as I can from Salonika to my home and to write it down.
Since then I have been to Salonika several times having a great time with Dimitra
and her charming parents, Kiki and Christos.
Every time they open for me, the door of their home and their hearts in the most natural way
and in the most natural way I feel with them family.
I’m getting to know their Salonika, the real one with clear face and the warm smile
I get to know them, their culture, their language, their kitchen, their nature beauty.
I am Learning their winter, their autumn, and their spring.
Wandering with them in their beautiful Macedonia,in the mountains and forests
touching their history and art, singing and reading songs. Eating, drinking, dancing
and visiting friends .Kissing, and hugging, talking and laughing
and sometimes sharing some tears
BUT most of all doing lot’s of xalara, shaping up my Greek:),
in their sweet warm home in Koufalia – where my heart is.
And here I am also learning a very important concept – xalara.
And what is xalara?
xalara (χαλαρά) – The tone / emphasis on the last a.
Xalara – is a Greek thing, especially in Salonika. Something like taking some of the time and life easy in a calm way.
Do not rush to anywhere, enjoy the delicious food, have a lot of drinking with a good company –
this is a quality time of the mind and the body.:)
A good trip for you and your wife Hagit!
Avihai, my friend, the poet,
Go and fall in love with your Salonika, get to know her slowly,
in her small things, let her show you her hidden beauty.
Let her sing to you, let her excite you.
Give yourself to her with closed eyes and full heart.
Salonika is yours! 🙂
May God Bless you with whatever you wish!
Shuli🌷

This book is beautiful. Your description of the the place and its accidental meet, and more know how about the place is indeed a pleasant surprise which you illustrated through your write. I loved the music too in the video, though I could not understand the language.
Thank you thank you so much for your kind words , dear Jhimly . you touched my heart!
