Post Reading Assignment

Two months have passed since WW1. I sailed from San Francisco to Yokahama to look into the Japanese pearl business. The traffic on the ships was heavy, so I had to share a cabin.  when i heard the name of my cabin partner, a stone came out of my heart. he was a British guy.

I got into the ship, put my stuffs, and I went to the smoking room.  I saw there my cabin partner. he was tall guy with black hair. I came to him and introduced myself . He seemed to by an interesting guy’ but he wasn’t friendly. i thought that maybe the fact that i dont look like a British guy, and i dont have a British name disappointed him, So i told him how happy i was when i heard the i am sharing my cabin with a British guy. he looked surprised.

I tried to talk with him about different subjects like alcohol, New York, San Francisco and politics. He didn’t talk that much, so I decided to show him some of my favorite card tricks. He didn’t like them.

He told me he’s going to the dining-room. Actually, i didn’t think he is going to be so unfriendly, so i have saved him a seat before. He wasn’t happy about it but I thought that if we are sharing the same cabin we should seat together.

At the ship,I met a lot of new people. It was very nice to talked with them about different subjects, but i didn’t agree with most of the things they said, and I was very determined to change their opinion.

One evening we shared a table with Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay. We had an argument about different kinds of pearls. Mr.Ramsay  thought he knows better than me, and he said that his wife’s pearls necklace is made of fake pearls. We had a bet on 100 dollars.

At the last moment, I said that I was mistaken, and I gave Mr. Ramsey 100 dollars. I understood why he though Mrs. Ramsay necklace was fake.

Next morning I woke up and found an envelope under the door. There was a 100 dollars bill inside.

My cabin partner asked me if the pearls were real.

I trusted him and told him that If I had a pretty little wife I shouldn’t let her spend a year in New York while I stayed at Kobe.

I hope he will look at me in a different light.
