I said good bye to my lover. He put the necklace on me. It was a beautiful real pearl necklace that he gave me when I said to him that I must leave him. I must leave NY.

I put on a fake smile when I saw Elmer-my husband. Elmer was fat, loved to argue, he was in American Consular Service and was stationed at Kobe. Elmer came to NY to fetch me (I was spending a year at home).

When we saw the ship, Elmer suddenly noticed my souvenir from my Lover, the necklace I were wearing, and asked me about her. I began to smile and blush. I thought about how I met my lover in that year in NY. But I told him that it was fake, and I bought it in 18$.

The room on our ship was small. I was sad that we did not have to share a cabin with someone else. I did not want to be alone with Elmer, when I thought about all the time that I am going to spent with him alone, it suggested closed portholes.

While I was eating my salmon meal, Mr. Kelada and Elmer were argue like another day on the sheep. I did not listen to the conversation. I only thought about how much I was missing to Zack, My lover.

I suddenly heard Mr.Kelada saying my name. “You take my word for it, Mrs.Ramsay, that chain you’re wearing will never be worth a cent less then it is now.” I was becoming red. I slipped the chain inside my dress. I didn’t want everybody notice that the pearls were real. I wanted to disappear.

My husband did not notice my blush, and smiled like he is winning the conversation, and said:”That’s a pretty chein of Mrs Ramsay’s, isn’t it?” I have just seen black. When he said that I thought he must known.

Mr.Kelada thought the necklace cost 15,000$ . My husband smiled and said what he wanted to believe, what I told him that the necklace cost me 18$. I glanced at Mr.Kelada and he flushed ans said:”Rot. It’s not only real, but it’s as fine a string for size as I’ve ever seen.” They have both bet on 100$ on it. Mr.Kelada that the necklace is real, and my husband that it is fake.

I needed to said something so i played dumb, and added a flirtatious smile:”Oh, Elmer, you can’t bet on certainty”.   “Can’t I? If I get a chance of easy money like that I should be all sorts of a fool not to take it.”

“But how can it be proved?”I continued to played dumb, like i forgot Mr.Kalada is in the pearls business. “It’s only my word against Mr Kelada’s.” I can afford to lose a hundred dollars,” said Mr Kelada.
“Take it off, dear. Let the gentleman look at it as much as he wants.”
I hesitated I didnt know what to do. He cant check it.I put my hands to the clasp. “I can’t undo it, Mr Kelada will just have to take my word for it.” But my husband rift it from me and handed the chain to Mr Kelada. The Levantine look a magnifying glass from his pocket and closely examined it.

A smile of triumph spread over his smooth and swarthy face. He handed back the chain. He was about to speak. I were white. I were about to faint. He caught sight of my face. I were staring at him with wide and terrified eyes. In that moment I knew that he know. He stopped with his mouth open. I saw the effort he was making over himself.
“I was mistaken,” he said. “It’s a very good imitation, but of course as soon as I looked through my glass I saw that it wasn’t real. I think eighteen dollars is just about as much as the damned thing’s worth.” He took out his pocket book and from it a hundred-dollar bill. He handed it to Elmer without a word. I was so relieved. But I just wanted to disappear. I felt my head is about to explode so I went to my state-room.

I decided I don’t want to live with that secret any more. I don’t want to live with the wrong man.

A year later:

I looked at my pearl necklace and remembered my story. I went outside to hug my husband, Zack.
