It is the eve of New Year’s Eve here in Israel. For days, each greets the other with ‘Happy New Year’, usually opening a positive conversation – or giving a warm ending to a short meeting.

Our radio programmes, newspapers and TV screens continue to be full of political recriminations, scandals, heart-wrenching pleas for release of our hostages and head-shaking at the naïvety of so much of the international community.

But yesterday, I rejuvenated my role as poodle and trolley-puller, following my wife, Aviva on her weekly or (as it seemed in this case) monthly visit to the Carmel market.
