Comparatives  of Adjectives

We use the comparative form of adjectives to compare two people, animals or things.

Susie is younger than Kate. Planes are faster than cars. Tigers are stronger than cats.

We use than after the comparative.

James is taller than his dad. Lions are faster than bears.

Superlatives

To form the superlative we usually add -est to the end of short vowels.

We use the before the superlative:

warm → the warmest, young → the youngest, fast → the fastest

For short adjectives ending in -e we add -st:

nice → nicest, fine → the finest, wide → the widest

For short adjectives ending in -y we change -y to -i  and then add -est.

happy → the happiest, friendly → the friendliest, lazy → the laziest

For short adjectives ending in vowel + consonant we double the final consonant.

big → biggest, fat → fattest, wet → wettest

We form the comparative of long adjectives with most + adjective:

beautiful → the most beautiful, expensive → the most expensive, comfortable → the most comfortable
