Have You Seen a Tornado?

In this ebook students will learn how tornadoes where tornadoes come from, where they most occur, formed and how to stay safe during a storm.

Grade Level: 5th grade

Student outcomes: students will be able to determine which states has the most tornadoes, how tornadoes form, and how to stay safe. They will be able to answer this through question and answers.

Have you ever seen a tornado? If you haven’t seen a tornado that is probably because they most likely don’t occur by you. Tornadoes usually occur in certain states such as, Mississippi, Illinois, Iowa, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana and Texas. There are other states that get tornadoes as well but these states have the most open land such as farm land. Therefore, tornadoes occur in those states most often.

How do Tornados form?

A tornado is developed in warm and moist environments. If the conditions are right the tornado can form. The Tornado is the cell of the storm and the sun provides the storm energy causing the Tornado to get bigger and stronger. The longer the sun heats the ground the longer the Tornado lasts and grows.

What Do I Do If There is a Tornado?

If there is a Tornado go to your basement or lowest floor in your house. Try not to go to a room with a lot of windows. For added protection go under a chair or table. Try to have an emergency kit that has water, food, first aid kit and protective gear in the room you and your family would shelter in.

Can Tornadoes do a lot of damage?

Yes, tornadoes can do a lot of damage. There are 5 categories during a Tornado watch. Since 1950 only fifty-nine tornadoes have hit a category five. It may seem like a lot but that means we haven’t had a category 5 hurricane since 2009.
