• Meaning of beauty pageant: 

A beauty pageant or beauty contest is a competition that has traditionally focused on judging and ranking the physical attributes of the contestants.

Pageants have now evolved to include inner beauty, with criteria covering judging of personality, intelligence, talent, character, and charitable involvement, through private interviews with judges and answers to public on-stage questions.

When we look at the beauty contests in general, we can clearly see that they actually reinforce the secondary social position of women. In fact, they are competitions that objectify and commodify the female body, and while doing so, focus on sexuality and the perception imposed by the capitalist system as beautiful.

There many reasons why beauty pageants should be banned, but let’s talk about the main reasons.

• Beauty pageants are very unsatisfactory because they expect girls or women to have skinny bodies, perfect teeth, perfect skin, perfect everything. All of these examples can cause low self-esteem in younger generations because they want to be like them and they can’t. All of this causes disordered eating behaviours, and associated concerns, body dissatisfaction, depression and lower self-esteem, this is all very ruthless because this can ultimately lead to suicide or drugs. Younger girls should love the way they are, they should focus on how their personality is, not focus on how they look. Furthermore, women and girls who lose beauty contests can be devastated and lose their self-confidence because they think they are not enough. So we should all learn that we are gorgeous in our way, we are all unique.
