So, what makes this song so special?

David Bowie’s perfectionism is one of the main keys to the song’s success. The sharp chords combined with some untraditional drum and shaker sounds give the audience a sensation of wonder and mystery. These wonderous and mysterious elements are introduced when Bowie sings about the darker themes like deception and death. Likewise, more traditional drums accompanied by major chords are played when he sings about happier themes like friendship.

Moreover, the pauses helping the storyline’s progress. For example, after saying long long time ago and returning to his present regretful feelings Bowie takes a pause accompanied by a guitar progression.

Another key factor is the brilliant lyrics. the main charter tells us an interesting and very relatable story about betrayal and deception. He judges his friend and compares him to himself. In addition, the villain is described as a normal lonely person which makes him relatable and makes us question if he really is evil. These philosophic questions make the listener think what would he do if he “lost control” or could he forgive someone who did.

In conclusion, as many of David Bowie’s this song is unforgettable. the relatable lyrics combined with the mysterious sad melody makes it one of the greatest songs ever made.
