This book is intended to teach 1st graders about letter sounds and substituting letters to make new words. As children are developing out of the emergent reading stage and becoming beginner readers/writers, it’s important to have the skill of knowing you can make a new word by plugging in new letters.

1RF2b: Create new words by manipulating individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken one-syllable words.

 

Student learning objectives:

Given a written or spoken word students will substitute a letter from the beginning, middle, or end of a word to create a new word.

What is phoneme substitution?

 

Phoneme substitution refers to the ability to replace a phoneme in a word with another phoneme to form a new word.

For homework:

 

Find an item in your house and substitute a letter at a time to create as many words as possible from it. Bring your list to tomorrow’s class. You may write out and/or draw out your words.
