What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented reality is when a digital application provides information into the real time environment of the user. (TechTarget Contributor, 2019)
What does augmented reality do?
Augmented reality allows the user to use technology to interact with their physical environment. Aspects of the physical world can be brought to life with augmented reality.
Educational Purposes
Augmented reality can be used in many different ways including in yearbooks, faculty photo walls, homework mini lessons as well as in word walls.
ARLOOPA
ARLOOPA is an augmented reality application that students can get in the Google App store. This application brings pictures in the book to life. In their Youtube video, you can see someone using the camera to hover over a picture in their textbook and then a 3D model of the picture appears on their camera. This would be amazing for my students when study units such as landforms. Students would have a better understanding of the terrain if they were to have a 3D model.
QuiverVision
QuiverVision is an application students use to bring their colorings to life. This app can be found in the Apple store and the Google Play Store. This application would be wonderful to use when we are practicing our sequencing of stories. I would also use this app so students could act out their narrative or informational writings. Students would be more engaged with their assignments if they were to use this application.
Skin and Bones (Smithsonian Institution)
Skin and Bones is an application that can be used at the Smithsonian, home, or school. This app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. The benefit of this app is that students can learn about the different exhibits with 3D models. Students can use the app to dive deep into certain animals and study their bones and habitats (ISTE E. 2.5b). This would be awesome to use when we study the plant and animal relationship unit.
Math Ninja AR
Math Ninja AR is a math game students can play in augmented reality. This application can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. I have never seen this before, but after looking for AR apps, I came across this. It looks engaging for my students. My students currently use Prodigy, but this one is more exciting! Students can move all around the room to get to different questions and villages. If I am able to get ahold of an Ipad, I would definitely love to use this with my students!
Wonderscope AR
Wonderscope is an application that brings stories to life! This application can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. Wonderscope is by far the coolest AR app that I found while looking for augmented reality applications. It has students engaged in their reading because the can actually see the characters right in front of them! Out of all of the applications, this is the one I want to try to the most with my students. I feel like this one will accommodate to the diverse reading skills of all my students (ISTE E. 2.5a).
