Dear Readers,

 

This book is intended for a 7th to 9th grade English classroom. This unit includes but is not limited to the different components of story, specifically in regards to plot. This an introduction to the basic principles of a story.

The learning objectives are as followed:

Students will learn the different components of a narrative plot.

Students will be able to apply this knowledge in follow activities.

Students will be able to recognize these components in the stories they are reading.

What is Plot Anyway?

 

Plot is the foundation of the story.

 

The plot differs from a story because of it’s emphasis on the cause and effect relationship through out the sequence of events throughout the major events of the narrative.

5 Key Elements of Plot

There are five key elements of the narrative plot:

1. Exposition/introduction

2.Rising action

3.Climax/turning point

4.Falling action

5. Resolution/denouement

Exposition/Introduction

In the exposition, the reader is introduced to the characters and the setting and how the story is taking place.

 

Rising Action

In the rising action, the primary conflict is introduced and we learn the stakes of this conflict is. The author is creating tension with the reader and the story.

Climax

The climax is the plot’s turning point. The character is going to make a decision that will alter the rest of the story. This is where the action is!

Falling Action

Falling action is when things are starting to slow down and the tension has been released. This is where the author would tie up any loose strings to the plot.

 

Resolution

The resolution is the ending to the story. The conflict has been dealt with and whatever needs to be cleared has done so. There is a clear and definite ending.

Discussion Questions:

 

Think of a book you have read or movie you have watched. Write out that plot line with the 5 key elements in the format shown previously.

 

What is your favorite part of the narrative plot? Why?

 

What makes plot different from a story? What is the significance between a story line and plot line?
