 What is Order of Operations?

Orders of Operation are the rules that say which calculation comes first in an expression.

These rules include:

• parentheses first: ()
• then do exponents
• then do multiplies and divides from left to right
• then do the adds and subtracts from left to right

Parentheses

When you start an equation you start with parentheses first.

4 × (5 + 3) = 4 × 8 =
32
4

Multiply or Divide

This is the next step and they are equal to each other. You also start left to right.

2 + 5 × 3 = 2 + 15 =
17
6

Add or Subtract

These two are also both equal and you go from left to right.

30 ÷ 5 × 3 = 6 × 3 =
18
