Turkey’s Position in The World

Turkey (Turkish: Türkiye), officially the Republic of Turkey ( Türkiye Cumhuriyeti ), is a transcontinental country, located mostly on Anatolia in Western Asia and on East Thrace in Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea is to the south; the Aegean Sea is to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia. Turkey’s location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a country of significant geostrategic importance.

The alluvium accumulated by the streams reaching the Black Sea from the Yıldız Mountains has formed the longoz. Erikli Lake is located in the north of İğneada and Lake Mert is located in the south. The settlement of İğneada interrupts the dune system extending along the coast. The sand dunes of 50-60 meters width extend to Saka Lake in the south. Distinctive plants live on dunes up to 10 km long. Sand dunes separate the sea from fresh water ecosystems such as swamps, lakes, and loams on land .

There are five lakes in the national park area. Although Erikli Lake is a lagoon , it is disconnected from the sea in summer. Mert Lake is located where Çavuşdere stream reaches the sea . Another lake separated from the sea by sand dunes in the south of the park is Lake Saka . Pedina lake and Hamam lake are 1–2 km inland .
