In light of recent instances of violence on process servers, it is imperative that servers around the world consider their own security. While document delivery is typically not dangerous, working in tough neighborhoods and with anxious people can put servers in potentially dangerous situations. Here are some process server security tips and resources to help you prepare your services.
1. USE AND CONSULT ERIN’S LIST
If you’ve never heard of it, Erin’s List is a free tool for process servers that enables them to report and observe locations where threatening incidents have occurred. With Erin’s List, servers can make informed decisions about where they serve and what jobs to do. Remember that it’s perfectly acceptable to pass up an effort if a situation compromises your safety in any way. If another process server has experienced negative interaction at the location in the past, do not try to serve yourself.
2. HAVE THE RIGHT TOOLS
An important part of preparation is bringing the proper equipment. When it comes to safety, this includes comfortable shoes and clothing that you can run in without losing your professional appearance. Depending on the person, it can also include defensive items such as pepper spray, a taser gun, or a legal firearm. If you bring these items, please know how to use them safely as you can access them quickly and without prior notice.
3. ALWAYS HAVE AN EXIT STRATEGY
Even if you are serving in what is generally considered a “safe” neighborhood, participate in each service knowing how to get out quickly. As you walk towards the door, look for objects that you can trip over or potentially use to defend yourself, as well as places where you can hide or use for cover. Always park as close as possible and keep your keys accessible in case you need to make a quick getaway.
4. REGISTER YOUR SERVICES
While this is a debated topic and laws vary by state, body cameras are an option for security-conscious Process Servers near me. Whether you use a legitimate body camera or simply record audio through your phone, recording your services provides indisputable evidence in the event of an incident. Claiming that you have a recording device can also deter irritated people from misbehaving. But before using such technology, check your local laws to see what types of recording devices are legal in your state.
5. EXIT WHEN REQUESTED
Good service is that the ideal goal, but it’s less important than your life. If someone threatens you, be it verbally, physically or with a weapon, do not challenge them or question their resolve. While some may make empty threats, it’s best not to risk it. Simply return to the safety of your vehicle and document your service attempt in its entirety.
6. Take the time to learn
It takes practice and experience to learn to defuse tense situations, but there are resources that can help. Seek the experience and opinion of mentors, take classes online or at your local college, or read about the experiences of others online. Just remember that an important part of defusing situations is recognizing when too much is gone and the only solution is to walk away.
7. BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING
Preparation looks different for different people. Some people like to arm themselves, others don’t. Some people wear bulletproof vests, others just wear clothes that they can easily run around in. Whatever the preparation is for you, start with the basics of telling someone where you are going, keeping a first aid kit in the car, and being aware of your surroundings so you know where to go in case of an emergency. Also, be aware of common hurdles that process servers face, such as handling dog attacks or overcoming natural disasters.
8. INVOLVE
There are many resources that process servers can use to expand their security knowledge and help others do the same. For example, ServeNow’s PAAPRS campaign promotes assault awareness and protection regulations for process servers. Erin’s List has also partnered with ServeManager to make security a priority without interrupting your daily routine.
