To My Friend, Samantha Ziegenhohn
(note: everything in this story is from imagination)
Chapter 1: Getting Kicked Out
Sam has always been a bit of a bad person. She has gotten suspended from school before, stole stuff from gas stations, and got into a lot of trouble and fights. She has a brother named Kevin, but he is in jail. Sam has always looked up to her brother, therefore that is why she is such a bad person now. She is only 12! One day, she decided to do something super big to impress her brother.
She quickly ate dinner with her family, then went to go “sleep.” At night, she made sure everybody was sleeping. She opens her window slowly, and crawls to the floor. She goes to the Chino Hills Juvenile Jail Center to see her brother. They don’t allow cell phones in the jail, so in order to contact him Sam would have to come by visiting hours to talk to him.
“Hey Kevin,” Sam says.
“What are you doing here, it’s not even visiting time!?” Kevin whispers.
“Shush, how do I get you out.”
Kevin confused, he tells Sam, “Get me that key over there,” pointing to the police bench.
“Okay.”
Sam sneaks to the police bench and gets the keys to unlock Kevin’s cell.
“C’mon, let’s get out of here,” Sam says.
After getting Kevin out, they quickly escape. They run and run, until they are fully off jail grounds. “Thanks,” Kevin says, “So, what’s your plan?”
“Well, here is the plan. Now since you have gotten out of jail, we go home, and…um..”
Kevin giggles. “You don’t have a plan don’t you.”
“Well, the plan was getting you out.. I don’t actually have another plan.”
“It’s okay, getting me out was a good enough plan. What are we gonna do about mom and dad though?”
“Oh gosh, I forgot about that..”
They think about what they are going to do about mom and dad. Then, Sam realizes that it’s almost the time mom and dad wake up. Sam freaks out. “OH NO, I’M IN TROUBLE IF I DON’T GET HOME.”
“Maybe I can come home with you!”
“ARE YOU JOKING!?! IF MOM AND DAD SEES YOUR NOT IN JAIL, THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO GET YOU IN JAIL!”
“True that..”
They continue to rush home, so Sam won’t get in trouble. They sneak into the window, and Sam goes in and jumps on her bed, so it looks like she has been sleeping the whole night. Kevin, stupidly, goes under Sam’s bed. “What are you doing!?!?” Sam whisper-yelled.
“Chillax”
“I cannot chillax!”
As they are arguing, they hear their parents footsteps. They quickly shut up and they pretend to be asleep. Kevin realizes it won’t matter if he pretends to sleep or not, he will still be in trouble. Kevin shifts the boxes so that they are in front of him, and so that their parents won’t see him. Then, their parents come in. “She looks asleep to me,” her dad whispered.
After their parents leave the room, Kevin yells, “YES!!” Their parents immediately rush into Sam’s room, not leaving Kevin enough time to hide.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE KEVN?!” Dad yells loudly
“WHY ARE YOU HERE!!?” Mom yells.
Sam can tell the fear in Kevin’s eyes, as their parents are very abusive, and Sam loved Kevin. So, Sam stepped up.
“Kevin is here because I got him out,”
“YOU DID WHAT!?” Mom and dad screamed.
“It’s true..so if you are going to punish somebody, punish me, not Kevin”
Mom and dad have never been so disappointed/angry at Sam.
“Thank you sis,” Kevin whispers.
After a few minutes, mom said,
“We decided a punishment for you Sam,”
“We are kicking you OUT!” Dad yells.
“WHAT! WHY!” Kevin and Sam screams.
“You have done too much trouble for this family. If Kevin didn’t get arrested, we would’ve kicked him out long ago. The police never arrested you for some reason, so we are kicking YOU out,” Mom explains.
“Yea, so pack your bags,” Dad replies roughly.
Sam is flooding her room with tears as she packs all her important items. She looks around her room, saying goodbye to everything else.
“Goodbye bed.. goodbye closet.. goodbye miniature kitchen set..”
“Ready to leave?” Said mom excitedly.
“I’ll miss having a good child.. maybe we can just adopt,” Dad said, making plans.
“Worst parents ever,” Sam mumbled to herself.
“GOODBYE!” Mom and dad said, kicking her to the curb, and locking the doors. Kevin launches out with Sam.
“I can take care of you Sam,” Kevin says.
“Thank you.”
Chapter 2: Living Life.. On the Streets
Sam and Kevin is outside there home, with no way to get inside. They are freezing, and barely have any food.
“What do we do Kevin? I feel like I’m going to die.”
“Don’t worry.. I have loose change!”
Kevin pulls out leftover money from his job, from jail, and from stealing. He has 100 bucks.
“Great Kevin! Lets spend it on… A HOME!”
Kevin sighs.
“This isn’t enough for a house.. or a hotel!” Kevin explains, “but, it is enough to buy food, drinks, clothes, and a blanket.”
“That’s it? Pathetic.” Sam mumbles.
Kevin makes Sam face him and says firmly, “Listen Sam, if you want me to take care of you, I’m in control 100%. Also, don’t talk back.”
Sam replies, “But I’m not talking back!! I’m just saying that’s it! IT’S NOT TALKING BACK DUMBO!”
Sam quickly puts her hand over her mouth, as she has said too much.
Kevin gets mad, but tries to not hit Sam.
“Oh, so it’s like this then, huh?”
“I DIDN’T MEAN IT, I’M SORRY!”
Kevin’s fist tighten, and he takes his money.
“Since my money is too low for you, how about you find some for yourself.”
He pushes Sam to the floor and walks away.
“DON’T FOLLOW ME!”
After Sam gets up from the harsh fall, she bundles up and cries alone.
“I wish I didn’t say anything..”
It starts to get dark, so she takes out a small blanket she has, and a dirty pillow, and sleeps in the sidewalk, all alone and very cold.
Chapter 3: All Alone
Sam has been alone for about a week now, and Kevin never came back. She has collected some food, water, and money from begging. She was so dirty, so messy, cold, and thought she was going to die any second. She decided to cry, because usually it helps her calm down.
