Hints for a good story:

A hero/ine whom you can identify/empathize with.

A strange situation/scenario/environment/time/atmosphere

The hero/ine has a character flaw

The hero/ine is challenged by someone/something

The hero/ine must learn to overcome his/her flaw

There are ups and downs.

The first sentence quickly ‘hooks’ you into the story

The ending surprises you.
