The ifs, the ands, the butts – at Shenkar College

It was early morning at Shenkar College. Students had queued up at the cafeteria to get their morning fix of caffeine. They didn’t know what was in store for them.

A contest. Doesn’t everyone love a contest?

Today’s contest was to estimate how many cigarette butts were on the ground of one of our adjacent outdoor patios.

Gal guessed 250.

Yifat guessed 100.

Omer guessed 200.

Hadar guessed 500.

Dafna guessed 240.

Ravid’s guess was 124.

Irene guessed 221.

Yotam, the optimist in the gang,  guessed 20.

Now, the only problem was to collect and count all the cigarette butts in the courtyard. That proved to be a major chores. At first, a group of students sitting on the patio were unimpressed.

“Why should we collect the butts?” they asked. “We didn’t throw them on the patio in the first place.”

I explained that they weren’t required by law to help me. “I will collect them myself,” I told them.

After all someone had to it. How else would we determine the winner?

I started getting down on my old knees, collecting butts. Suddenly they had a change of heart. They helped. And not only did they help, I think they actually enjoyed it. Some of them even smiled.

But my biggest Shenkar hero of the day was Adam Efrati. He collected over 100 butts. He wasn’t even eligible for the contest prize! That is what I call a great guy.

So, ladies and gentlemen, this is part of the haul. Tomorrow is a new day, and to be frank we didn’t finish collecting all the butts. But we will get to the bottom of it and announce a winner.

In the meantime, looks like Hadar’s guess of 500 is going to be the winner by a long shot.

And what will we do with all the butts we collect?

Looks like Hen and Topaz have their work cut out for them.
